For everyone who is more comfortable with ordering from an English-speaking website, it appears that the Japanese version of The Empyrean is available for pre-order on EIL.com. The price is slightly scary, but that's the way it usually goes in Europe with Japanese imports.
For those who have no problems with ordering from Japan and no paranoias associated to shipping things to the other side of the world, CDJapan has it a bit cheaper (thanks to Leni for the tip!).

$55!?
That's the price I paid for the Empyrean CD & LP preorder + shipping!
Hope to find it cheaper at some another place, but thanks anyways for the head-up Iva!
Does anyone know, if the non-Japan Edition will also be on SHM-CD format? Never heard it before. The link says some japanese company researched this technique.
Sorry for doublepost:
The SHM-CD seems to be some japanese thing.
Some wild guess: Maybe John likes the advantages of the format and promotes it by doing an earlier release and more songs on the Japan-Version
