NOTHING about Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante is conventional. In fact, he thrives on eccentricity. From a strictly mental perspective, Frusciante seems to have his head wound up a little tighter than before.
More significantly, he treats us with hauntingly lovely guitar lines and peculiar but incandescent melodies. His loose-limbed vocals, enveloped around bizarre sound effects and drum machines, sound as though he's in a perpetual state of mourning.
There's a fine line between brilliant and unlistenable - and Frusciante straddles both these extremes squarely. Listen closely to Away & Anywhere, With No One and Saturation and you'll understand why the hushed melodrama makes sense.
