John Frusciante certainly happens to be the most charismatic and interesting member of Red Hot Chili Peppers, partly because of his obvious shyness and introvertedness, which is completely different from how the other three band members act like; as well as because of his obvious will for life, a different view of the world, alternative, maybe even a bit eccentric thoughts on other dimensions, life after death and life in general. He has an unbelivable amount of positive energy, he’s approaching all his projects very seriously, he’s somewhat of a philosopher, he’s more educated and he’s definitely read more books than the most of the today’s greatest musicians and he’s absolutely not fitting into the stereotype cliché of a “rock star” His music contains a discrete charm of unperfection and only a few guitarists have reached such an admirable level to be able to experiment and hit the perfection in its face. Many passionated music followers often don’t even notice how many of his compositions have been ruined by the likes of All Saints and Crazy Town. Many of today’s guitarists just play three chords one after another and they’re more known for their image than their techinque, sensitivity and inspiration, so the existance of John’s solo music and his contribution to Red Hot Chili Peppers is a breath of fresh air, something that’s breaking the standards and introducing people to one totally new kind of music. He’s recording albums to make them independent of time, he says that they could’ve been recorded in the 70s as well and they’d sound the same. He sings about the will to death, yet he seems to be enjoying every single second of his life. The words of his songs are like a complicated puzzle, deep and meaningful, but maybe not so easy to understand when an average listener reads them for the first time.
The sense of beauty is often found in simplicity. Doesn’t a pine tree look much better in a forest than with all the fancy Christmas decorations? You simply know and feel that it’s more alive. The way John is expressing his emotions through his solo albums and music he’s writing for the band is simply something you cannot measure and compare to anything. And, despite what some “critics” say; John never actually lost his skills. It’s just like riding the bicycle or swimming: a thing one can’t forget once they’ve learned it. But, there’s one more thing: musicians are growing up, getting mature and so does their music. You cannot expect a 30+year-old man whose views broadened and who notices more things in life to have the same style he used to have as a 19-year-old boy. All the phases of this man’s music are equally wonderful to see how his music matures together with him and how his soul and his music have formed an very tight connection, so they depend on each other.
Many people actually tend to see John as some kind of a modern philosopher, not fitting into any stereotypes and approaching many sort-of-forbidden subjects from a point of a view characteristic for sensitive people. His explanation that learning something new every day is very useful, yet not knowing anything about current political events, makes him unique. He studies mathematics, but he doesn’t invest money in anything. He’s cooking his own meals and reading while having breakfast, yet he can forget which was his hotel room on the tour. Yet, on the other side, considering his love for art, books and all kinds of music (including classical), John can truly be considered an intellectual among the today’s rock musicians.
