Welcome to the fifth edition of Saturday question, split in three pieces. This has been a busy week on Invisible Movement and I assume everyone will take some rest this weekend. I do hope that everyone who felt like it donated to the site. A couple more smaller donations will lead to paying both hosting bills. I also hope that all of you have enjoyed the birthday suns.

So, we all know amazing cover songs John did, like this one:

(Forming II - originally by Germs)

This Saturday's question is: what are your favourites amongst them? Feel free to post links to them, too. Also, what are your all-time-favourite cover songs, regardless of who covered what? And, last but not the least, what cover songs do you hate?

31 Reactions to Saturday question #5: Cover songs

  1. Zebadiah says:

I gotta say either Midnight Shift by Donna Summer or Those Magic Changes. For favorite cover song I will say Jimi Hendrix doing Like a Rolling Stone and for least favorite I will say Mr Bungle covering the Chili Peppers. Bastards.

  2. halcyon says:

Probably "You and Whose Army?" by Radiohead.
The best cover of all time..."Song to The Siren" ! I can´t remember any other cover song done with so much passion and so.. it's brilliant !

  3. mike says:

tiny dancer or i feel love

  4. fruscianta says:

I love all the songs john had covered.
But my favourites are Tiny Dancer by Elton John and Secret Side by Nico

  5. Máté says:

I can't pick one best, but my favourite covers are SOS, Tiny Dancer, Maybe and of course Song to the Siren :)

  6. Bojana says:

i have to say that my 2 favorite musicians of all time did such amazing covers! of course, kurt [nirvana] and john. i like the way kurt experimented with different bands/singers [not only on the Unplugged session], and i see john being the same. doing covers is very complicated and not so advisable. you have to have in mind that people like the original song the way that is, and changing it in any way is very risky. on the other hand, i wouldn't want to hear any musician covering some nirvana/john/rhcp songs.

  7. Baro says:

I'm very partial to How deep is your love, but that's because I love to play it on bass and it sounds great when I sing in in duet with the singer of my band

  8. frankie says:

"How can I tell you" is my favorite cover by John.

  9. Dale says:

Has to be NEW DAWN FADES

  10. Martin says:

    Secret Side...original by Nico

  11. Alan says:

Tiny Dancer for my John cover. Champagne Supernova by Matt Pond PA or Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley for the best cover of all time and either Run by Leona Lewis or Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke for the worst cover

  12. Powaz says:

Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime by Beck (The Korgis song). A song from the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack. Amazing movie, amazing soundtrack. :)

  13. Josh says:

Tiny Dancer... and for my favorite cover. One that sticks in my head is No Quarter, Tool covering Led Zeppelin.

  14. Vicky says:

I think I like all of John's covers, it's really hard to pick only one D: 'How can I tell you' is the one a listen to more, I think. Maybe my all-time-favorite should be Baby's on fire by The Venus in Furs and the one I hate is for sure Come as you are by Caetano Veloso, although I like Cae.

  15. Damien says:

    Oo With john its erm
    Songbird :)
oor either, Lucky and New Dawn Fades [aswell as Song To The Siren]

    And for other musicians erm
RHCP Search and Destroy and I get around, they own!

god, i can't really decide which of the cover songs are the best (or worst). i mean, john makes great music so all his covers are great, haha!

  22. Danny says:

Favorite John covers are Lounge Act (nirvana) and For Emily. As for cover I HATE the most, I cant remember the name of the group, but it was that all-girls group that covered Under the Bridge.

  23. allen gallagher says:

tiny dancer from 1990,(Elton John) has to be my favourite.I also like others suh as Song to the siren and SOS

  24. Jenna says:

I love 'Tiny Dancer', 'How Deep Is Your Love', 'Your Song'... infact, every song that John has ever covered. He's just got one of those voices , i think.
As for the worst covers ever, its got to be All Saints (they absolutely butchered 'Under The Bridge'!!) and Alexandra Burkes version of 'Hallelujah'.

  25. Jake says:

For Emily (whenever I may find her) is my favorite. The original by Simon and Garfunkel was a favorite of mine and when I heard John's version, the song went from an 8 to a 10.

  26. Manu1236 says:

i think the best covers are maybe and how deep is our love, they make me listen to frusciante.
the worst cover i ever listen is under the bridge by All Saints
