Yes it’s the guitarist from the Red Hot Chili Peppers who left the band for a while for an extended ‘mental health’ day. It’s also the guy who created one of my favourite musical breakdowns (his solo debut “Niandra La Des and Usually Just A T-Shirt”) – the title of which was one of the more sensible things contained inside it! But times have changed, he’s cleaned himself up the best he can, and now on album no 4 (I think) John Frusciante is actually 2 people – he’s also one Josh Klinghoffer (who helps out on all instrumentation / singing / and most importantly clarity). So if you DID find the “Niandra La Des…” side of him hysterical (but in a good way), you may be disappointed to learn that he’s learnt how to hold a note and play a tune… FEAR NOT – it’s actually REALLY good (and, even better, doesn’t sound like RHCP at all!). Loosen up your ears and let them get ready for a bunch of great songs: farty electronic interludes ala Richard D. James jammed between some fine ‘pop’ (well, almost…) suckerpunches. One I wasn’t expecting to dig, but it’s a BIG BIG shovel I now have. (whaaaat?)
