The Press review of AW
16th October 2004, The Press (USA)
…In which John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) indulges his professed love of underground kings Fugazi, even hooking up with the DC quartet’s bassist, Joe Lally, for an essentially experimental outing under the Ataxia moniker. Lally is, as usual, faultless. Frusciante messes about with guitar, synthesiser and voice, making a few splashes here and there but never really going anywhere. So while it’s interesting enough, the overall effect is an amorphous mishmash of stoner rock and prog-punk. Frusciante describes Fugazi as “my favourite band in the world”; sadly, he didn’t take a couple more leaves out of his heroes’ book, like energy, movement, focus and direction.
