Daily Mail review of ASITHOS

John Frusciante’s fifth – yes, fifth – solo album of 2004 finds the Chili Peppers guitarist straying from previous efforts (and his main band’s music) by embracing electronics.
Of the seven lengthy tracks here, many hark back to the German synthesiser acts of the Seventies.
The excellent opener, Sphere, sounds like an inspired cross between Kraftwerk and Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, while another number, The Afterglow, recalls vintage Joy Division, with the melody lines all coming from Klinghoffer’s bass.
Never intended as a mainstream release, this is still more than a superstar vanity project.
