I remember reading an interesting article about “personal Jesus” around the time the cover was released. Rubin wanted Cash to do the cover, but Cash’s guitar rendition was rather lackluster and they were about to give up when Rubin thought of the perfect answer. Knowing Frusciante is a huge fan of Depeche Mode, Rubin gave him a call and asked him to record the guitar parts for them. In typical Frusciante fashion, the recording was finished in a matter of minutes and the tape was immediately sent to them. So, oddly enough, Frusciante and Cash never actually worked on the song together. It was made in two separate parts.
