Speed Dealer Moms

Speed Dealer Moms are Aaron Funk (more widely known as Venetian Snares) and John Frusciante. Speed Dealer Moms have a catchy name that'll surely get stuck in one's ear. Speed Dealer Moms apparently don't like attention. Speed Dealer Moms are, however, going to perform live for the first time at the annual Bangface Weekeender rave in Camber Sands, UK. Speed Dealer Moms have a music Myspace page without any actual music on it. The reason for it is stated below.

all of our tunes are too long to fit on the side of a record or in a myspace player so you have to imagine what they sound like. that might be better anyways because you could imagine them to sound however you like!

For the same reason, they're not signed to a label.

Little is known about this project. Photos of "2008 Modular Jam At Casa Cyrusrex" have been uploaded on the internet shortly after 10th June that year, the day when the jam took place. John and Aaron were amongst the people in photos and quite a few people pointed out that their collaboration would be an interesting thing. Well, obviously, both musicians had similar thoughts on this.

According to insiders who'd prefer to remain anonymous, John came to Winnipeg in August 2008 and stayed there for two weeks, recording music with Aaron and having custom equipment built for him for his future projects. During this period of time, around eight hours of music came out of the sessions. It is not clear if that's Speed Dealer Moms' material, but given the description of their music, it probably is. Late in 2008, a page was created for the project on Myspace, but it was not announced anywhere and it is also likely that the friends were being accepted selectively - e.g. this website got a notice to befriend the project from yet another insider who'd prefer to remain anonymous.

Speed Dealer Moms were announced as Bangface Weekender '09 act early in January. As per the festival's website, SDM are festival's highlight:

*SUPERSTAR ACID COLLABORATION ALERT*
John Frusciante (Legendary guitarist of the RHCP) & Aaron Funk(Venetian Snares) are joining forces for the first time to bring us a live 303 & 808 analogue show as...SPEED DEALER MOMS

John himself has not said anything about this project, other than vaguely mentioning that he'd be "doing a show but that it will be different" in an interview with the French magazine Guitarist & Bass. This explanation lost on its secrecy as John's interview was published two months after SDM's live performance was announced.

On the other hand, Aaron Funk talked about the project in the online edition of Winnipeg sun and he seemed a bit unenthusiastic about RHCP fans in the crowd.

Bangface Weekender 2009

"People seem to be making a huge deal out of it," says Funk, admitting he's not keen on the fuss. "I feel kind of weird about it. I am kind of concerned about having to deal with people who just want to check us out because of John's brand name."

Then again, he's not too worried. After all, "any Red Hot Chili Peppers fans who come to one of my shows are in for a shock."

Que sera. For all news on this project, check the news items tagged with "speed dealer moms".
