Weekly playlists

Weekly playlist: 25th December 2007 – 01st January 2008

The last playlist in 2007 has arrived. As you can see, in future it will be announced on Tuesdays instead of Mondays, as it’s easier that way…and also, because it will be a bit more homogenic next (two) week(s). And…I wanted that next one to be up on the first day of 2008, anyway.

Here’s a brief list of what’s on. To read more about it and see where you can get the last one if you liked it, click the “read more” link.

  • 2001, 30th January: New Dawn Fades
  • 2001, 30th January: So Would’ve I
  • 2000, ?: A funny Much Music interview with John and Anthony
  • 2006, 02nd October: Readymade solo
  • 12th November 1989: Good God Jam
  • 2007, 26th June: A sneak preview of the TV broadcast
  • 2006, 24th November: a different beginning of By The Way
  • 2007, 31st January: See Emily Play
  • The String Quartet tribute to RHCP: Snow ((Hey Oh))
  • A cover of The Slaughter, by Jordan McLean

Something solo:
Once again, on this week’s rotation there are two clips from a solo show John did in 2001, in Prinzenbar in Hamburg, Germany; and German TV station (that unfortunately does not exist anymore) Viva II filmed two songs, So Would’ve I and a cover of Joy Division’s New Dawn Fades. The first song was performed at almost every solo show he’s done in the post-1997 period, but this version is extremely intense, a great way to say goodbye to the old year. And what would have you done?

Something chatty:
If you have ever heard of the 2000 Much Music interview where John and Anthony are in the studio and Anthony says he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, yet John says he’d want to be…well, you’ll see as this interview bit is also on the playlist. Sorry for the low quality, the file was saved from a different place long ago.

Some cleaning it up, Johnny-style
From this short introduction it is obvious that the next thing on the playlist is a Readymade solo; recorded on 02nd October 2006 in Boston, by Stephanie Cruz. Very raw, very rockin’. John sure cleaned something up.

Something oldschool:
This one’s for people who are more fond of John’s earliest work with the Peppers and who are more into oldschool funk. Here’s a Good God jam from the concert in New York on 12th November 1989.

Some sneak preview, it is
So, next week we’ll finally see RHCP’s set at Green Fest profesionally recorded. Here’s a sneak preview of that, the same one that was given to a bunch of local and foreign TV stations and other media representatives; to give you a picture of how many of us were there in the crowd and what you’re going to get. RTS are known to have a bunch of very skilled professionals experienced in live recording and they have been in some unusual situations in the last couple of decades, so this was actually a vacation for them. Behold a bit of Can’t Stop and a bit of Dani California; in front of the biggest crowd on the latest tour.

(And now for) Something completely different
The RHCP-concert-junkie from England, Stuart Byrne, caught something unusual on the show in Hamburg on 24th November 2006. It’s the intro for By The Way and something’s quite…different. I won’t tell you what it is, see for yourself.

Something for the crazy diamonds
Among the twenty-six songs John has covered during the Stadium Arcadium world tour, some were performed many times, such as Bee Gees’ How Deep is Your Love, but some, such as See Emily Play, one of Pink Floyd’s first songs to grace the world, was performed only once during the tour; in Ft. Lauderdale, USA. And it was recorded by “Skin Blues”, the same person who provided great photos from this show.

Something promotional:
Invisible Movement is, once again, very proud to announce that The String Quartet put out their new CD: Strung Out volume 3 – The String Quartet Tribute To Alternative Rock Hits. They have covered three RHCP songs in a very unique fashion on this CD and the one we’re listening to this week, symbolically because we’re saying bye bye to an old year and it’s winter in the northern hemisphere, is Snow ((Hey Oh). If you like it, the CD is available on iTunes and it is also available for purchase on the Vitamin Records website. I enjoyed listening to the same notes played on different instruments and strings & winter are the greatest combination ever. If you have not realised that in the past two weeks, this is your last chance.

Something by the visitors:
Jordan “Jay” McLean lives in Ottawa, Canada and enjoys both playing and listening to the music. Some of his covers were featured in the old fans’ covers section which has not been re-established yet; but he has some new material and this week you can hear him covering John’s The Slaughter. For more information and more music, check out his band’s MySpace.

Next week or even next two weeks, playlist will be a bit crowded, I’m afraid. So, if you would like your material to appear here from 15th to 21st January 2008 or if you have suggestion for what should be on that playlist, or a theme for a playlist; write to me, but remember: nothing before 15th January.
