Weekly playlist: 14th – 19th February 2008
Here’s a brief list of what’s on this one-day-shorter-than-usual week’s playlist, which is a bit more messy this time, to see if you always play it until the end or not. To read more about it and see where you can get the last one if you liked it, click the “continue reading” link.
This week’s playlist is, as you can see, themed. There are actually two times: celebrating seven years from the release of To Record Only Water For Ten Days and, obviously, celebrating the love, as today is 14th February. I’m not too keen on these things myself (made-up commercial holidays, not love); but I figured out it would be very nice to have an appropriate theme for the week.
- 22nd November 2006: For Emily (Wherever I May Find Her)
- 15th June 2006: How Deep Is Your Love?
- 12th August 2006: How Deep Is Your Love?
- 07th December 2006: Blue Sunday
- 2002: A funny little snippet from Jonathan Ross Show
- 14th February 2001: Going Inside + little interview
- 23rd April 2006: I Feel Love
- 23rd April 2005: The First Season
- 03rd February 2001: Beat Down
- 27th April 2001: Your Pussy… with a second verse
You might remember this from before the video section went under heavy reconstruction. It might be the best live version of Simon and Garfunkel’s emotional classic that John ever sung. So, once again, it’s For Emily (Wherever I May Find Her), this time from Camden Roundhouse, on 22nd November 2006. It was recorded by an old friend of I-M.net, the amazing Kim Holloway.
Measuring love
Another beautiful classic gets spiced-up by John’s impressive vocal range and instead of a cherry on top, there’s stunning falsetto. I think Gibb brothers would be jealous, actually. There are two versions of How Deep Is Your Love? on this playlist and the first one is from 15th June 2006. It was sung by the maestro on a hot summer night in Berlin and recorded by Anne.
Measuring love again
The other performance of the Bee Gees’ classic for the week was recorded by blastoo at the Endfest in Seattle, USA; on 12th August 2006. It’s not really a close-up, but the sound is good and the distance didn’t scale the emotions in any way.
Blue love
Oh yes, this one was on the playlist before, but it simply has to go on there again. The Doors’ Blue Sunday was performed only twice, only in December 2006. Here’s the first of those two Blue Sundays, performed on 07th December in Vienna and recorded by Dmitri Fedoruk.
Funny love?
This really, really short clip is from Jonathan Ross Show in 2002. It’s cute and no one knows what really happened, but the host’s reaction clearly shows that he needs an eye operation.
Love?!
This one was recorded on this very day seven years ago, for Canadian TV channel MuchMusic. John is performing Going Inside and then he sits down for a short interview. Before his performance, he blows a kiss and after the performance, he receives a rose from the host, yet refuses to be his Valentine. Timeless AND priceless. Enjoy!
Feeling love
I Feel Love simply has to be on a playlist like this one. This time it’s from the RHCP promo show in Copenhagen on 23rd April 2006. Though the cameramen decided to focus on Anthony’s dancing and Chad’s bald head, John’s voice is as powerful as ever.
Live love
The First Season is, undoubtedly, one of the highlights of John’s 2001 solo effort. Therefore it had to be on this playlist, as performed in 2005, on the ATP festival.
Searching for love
One of the other 2001 highlights, this time amongst unreleased songs that latear appeared on the internet album, would surely be Beat Down. Many tears went down each time John performed this one, so there must be some love associated to it. Here’s the song, from 03rd February 2001 in Paris.
Love.
If there was a poll on how many verses does Your Pussy Is Glued To A Building On Fire have, many people would get the answer wrong. There is a second verse, that’s what should’ve been in place of that screetching on the album track, but for an unknown reason, it was not. However, John sang it live once, at the last show of the 2001 TROWFTD mini tour in San Francisco. It was Friday, 27th April and the stars must have been unusually bright or in some incredibly rare position…or, simply, the love was there and the last card had to be revealed. So, here it is, the song with a hidden second verse. Listen carefully and love it, because, at the end of the day and, at the end of playlist, it’s all about love, period.
