Number four in Frusciante’s proposed six-album (unofficially) sonic therapy cycle follows three albums of eccentric but accessibly pleasant angst-rock. There’s a strong roots/Appalachian blues accent in Frusciante’s influences, but it’s more inferred than heard – it’s the spiritual inspiration behind his urbanized confessional folk roots. Liquor, God and coal mines give way to class A drugs, personal accountability and rock stardom, but the effect is every bit as intimate, vulnerable and stoic. 4 stars.
