New Strait Times review of TROWFTD

22nd April 2001, New Strait Times (USA)

NOTHING about Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante is conventional. In fact, he thrives on eccentricity. From a strictly mental perspective, Frusciante seems to have his head wound up a little tighter than before.

More significantly, he treats us with hauntingly lovely guitar lines and peculiar but incandescent melodies. His loose-limbed vocals, enveloped around bizarre sound effects and drum machines, sound as though he’s in a perpetual state of mourning.

There’s a fine line between brilliant and unlistenable – and Frusciante straddles both these extremes squarely. Listen closely to Away & Anywhere, With No One and Saturation and you’ll understand why the hushed melodrama makes sense.
