Unknown review of Smile
As up and down as this release from the Chili Pepper guitarist of yore may sound from the outset, it takes only a few serious listenings to appreciate the tortured genius of his minimalist guitar work. The songs’ four-track recording gives them a folky, DIY feel, and Frusciante’s vocals range from a low sexy howl to incomprehensable Adam Sandler sound-alike ramblings, but his exploration of different styles and sounds throughout gives the album the quality of looking at the private musings in an artist’s sketchbook. The cover’s painting is a Frusciante original. Cover art = 8
