Life indeed is a funny game. While all the albums before it were full-length in either terms of time or number of songs, this one is an EP with a simple title, standing for the name of the city where it was written and recorded, just a couple of weeks before the major mainstream release, Shadows Collide With People, was out. DC EP is produced by Ian McKaye, the frontman of Fugazi and former frontman of Minor Threat and founder of the straight-edge philosophy. A member of French Toast, Jerry Busher, drums all along the EP. While some of John’s admirers diss this EP, the others consider it to be a logical follower of The Will To Death as there’s a certain similarity when it comes to song subjects and the general style. It’s raw, stripped down to the most intimate feelings and fears and spiced up with the trademark backing-vocal-like lalalas. Like it or hate it, but DC EP was a clear proof that John can make a great record without the help of his large arsenal of guitars and synths and leaving the production to someone else. It’s still him, with his wide vocal range, brutally sincere lyrics and 6-string magic. (© 2004)

Samples

[xspf]_start(FALSE, ‘order=33,34,35,36&mode=3’)[/xspf] Disclaimer: All the songs’ lyrics on the album was written by John Frusciante and it is © Niandra LaDes Music/BMI. This is the official lyrics from the album’s booklet. I only made a couple of tiny corrections on the places where John has obviously altered the “official” lyrics and/or added the repeating lines and backing/harmony vocals for your convenience.
All samples are around 30 seconds long and used with the publisher’s permission. If you want the CD, scroll down to “useful links” for information on how and where to buy it.
