The third part is a bit late, but that means the fourth part might be a bit early.
So, here it is. The newest review and a digest of all the reviews so far.
This one is from Express Night Out.
All in a very Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam-like voice, he discusses the role of a higher power on "God" ("You can do what you want, or so you think"), muses over his own importance on "Dark/Light" ("Will you let everyone in on the meaning of life and death / Do you need me, or are you waiting for my last breath?") and wonders about lost chances on "Enough of Me" ("I've had enough of new todays / For once, I'd like to go another way"). It's all kind of nihilistic, a little cryptic and vaguely existentialist, but coupled with such pretty-sounding instrumentals, Frusciante creates an auditory experience that's quite engaging (if you're willing to sit through all 54 minutes, that is).
Frusciante seems to veer off course at times — he overuses the vocal echo effect a lot, especially on "Unreachable," and the mid-song break on "Dark/Light" as it skids into gospel territory is incredibly unexpected — but "After the Ending" makes it all worth it. On the album's final track, Frusciante channels Pink Floyd to the max, layering piano and guitar with his falsetto vocals to create his final experiment into the nature of pain, death and its effect on humanity.
While Frusciante's lyrics — which include lines such as "Although death is transforming / There is nothing after the ending/ Everything is eternal / Nothingness does not exist" — all seem every existential (and kind of like the message of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," but we digress), they're a perfect encapsulation of Frusciante's constant inner conflict and intrinsic talent. Together, the two have created one devastatingly beautiful, constantly depressing package; until the Chili Peppers call off that whole hiatus thing, this might tide their more experimental fans over.
