Guitar World ranked BloodSugarSexMagik 18th on their list of 100 greatest guitar albums, published two days ago

18) Blood Sugar Sex Magik, 1991 (The Red Hot Chili Peppers)

It came out of a haunted mansion in the Hollywood Hills—the album that established the Red Hot Chili Peppers as major-league contenders in the game of rock. By this point, the Peppers had survived the Eighties L.A. punk scene, a head-spinning succession of personnel changes and the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak. But now they had John Frusciante in the fold, not to mention producer Rick Rubin, who worked with the band for the first time on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. There would be no Rage Against the Machine, nor any rap metal, without Blood Sugar’s amalgam of funk, metal and hip-hop vocalizing.

WHAT THEY SAID

Flea: “That was the beginning of a new era for us. Breaking into the mainstream was a real change in our lives. Also it was a time when John brought a whole new concept into the band as a guitar player and songwriter. It suddenly gave us so much more to draw from—a bigger launch pad for us all to get launched into outer space from.”

Frusciante: “Following the great creative peak of recording Blood Sugar, the positive feelings I had had began to dissipate.”

Many thanks to Roberto Campos for the heads-up.

10 Reactions to BSSM #18 on the list of 100 greatest guitar albums, according to Guitar World

It gives us a great feeling to find out that BSSM is ranked 18th, way ahead of many big names but why is it that in all the classifications and rankings either published or displayed on music channels they mostly focus on the ROOTS and OLD stuff and ignore the new achievements of artists that are still active? i bet they've never considered the likes of SA,2006(RHCP) or DM,2008(METALLICA) to be evaluated in terms of being included in such a list. That's truely obvious that the apogee of John's guitar work has taken place in the SA and had they-the Guitar World- just given it a thought to take into account the magic of SA guitar work, then The Peppers would've certainly ended up with an album in the top 10.....my favorite BSSM guitar songs are: MY LOVELY MAN,NAKED IN THE RAIN,SUCK MY KISS and IF YOU HAAVE TO ASK.

  2. Tom says:

    What amazing news!

When you consider that he was roughly 18 when it was written & recorded, he is way ahead of the rest of the pack.

  3. Jack T says:

In my opinion BSSM is the greatest album ever by anyone, so I beleive it really deserves a high place on this list. Especially as it it's a list of greatest guitar albums, because John's guitar work is truely sublime.

  4. Duncan says:

Maybe they didn't consider Stadium Arcadium because it isn't as good as Blood Sugar Sex Magik or any of the other albums on the list for that matter. I can't stand Metallica either but I fully agree with the Hendrix, Floyd and Zeppelin choices.

  5. kev says:

Good news indeed I just love watching the documentry on the recording "Funky monks" Johns personality and guitar playing changed soo much... He wasn't roughly 18 though im pretty sure he was more like 20 21. That album and guitar work is sooo rockin funky powerful sexy creative and very hendrixy...man what an album

You're right about BSSM, thanks for pointing it out! It was Mother's Milk that was when he was 18 and BSSM when he was 21. Still remarkable, i'd love to know what the average age of the guitarist @ recording for the other 49 albums.

      Born: March 5, 1970 (age 38)

Recorded November 1988 – March 1989 at Ocean Way Studios and Image Studios, Hollywood, California

Recorded May 1991 – June 1991 at The Mansion in Los Angeles, California

No way! Every critic has also lavished praise on John's dominant guitar work all over the SA...numerous solos and beautiful riffs altogether in a marvelous double album. This is the best RHCP feast ever for their fans. The likes of Torture Me,Wet Sand, Turn It Again, Readymade and She's Only 18 along many others on this album could be considered as the apogees of a guitarist's career.SA owes its greatfulness to the essentiality of BSSM but it is way better than its predecessors in terms of guitar playing.

  7. behnood says:

The big joke on this list is the inclusion of Pink Floyd with 2 mild and boring albums while leaving out the bands such as Opeth and Dream Theatre or the solo works of Marty Friedman!!!...I believe that Marty is the third greatest guitarist ever only for Jimi Hendrix and John Frusciante to be the first and the second, respectively.

    • Duncan says:

Well Behnood I guess you're right in the sense that it is best guitar albums and not best albums. David Gilmour is not a jaw dropping guitarist but in terms of melody and beautiful playing he is one of my favorites. So yeah, if it's technical guitar playing you're looking for then maybe Opeth and Dream Theatre should be on there. But if it's melodic, beautiful guitar playing then this list is shit, which I happen to think it is. (Except Zeppelin and company... I think Metallica is very overrated.)

      • behnood says:

Thanks Duncan.I do agree with your opinion except for the fact that I consider SA to be the best guitar album by The Peppers and not merely their best album.
