(Oh boy, here it goes again.)

Late in 2008, when MusicRadar staff spoke to Chad Smith, he said that RHCP were taking a year off and that he's concentrating on his new all-star band, Chickenfoot. And then, early in January this year, there was the podcast featuring John who said something completely different. After the dust has settled, Joe Bosso of MusicRadar reportedly contacted Chad Smith again, who then said:

"We've been on a break for a year and whatever," Smith said. "I can't speak for John - he's doing his thing and hopefully he's happy - but I think when we're all ready to play again, when we feel like it's time to be the Chili Peppers again, we'll do it.

You can't force anybody to play who doesn't want to. I'm not naming names. I'm just saying we all have to feel that the time is right to get it together."

You can read the whole article over there. I'm not making any polls here because I think it's slightly disrespectful at this point when everything is "indefinite"; but you're, as always, welcome to have your say in the comments. Just be nice.

20 Reactions to Chad Smith clarifies (not) the status of Red Hot Chili Peppers

  1. Novalise says:

I personnaly think it's normal that it takes a couple of years to get by before you start playing as a band again. So I'm not worried. Spending so much time together making music and going on tour must be like a marriage where you're living on a to small space. In the end you love each other anyway so you always get back to one and other. So I'll just sit back and wait and enoy the music that's already out there!!

  2. Bil says:

exactlly people should relax and i know they will come back and
    do another chili peppers album.

but in my opinion when chad said wont mention any names that
doesnt want to play has to be Mostly John!
cuz if u heard him music rader he didnt seem into it about the
    peppers future.

  3. orange varld says:

I think this information reassuring too. And I think it makes things more clear !

I also think it is especially John who don't want to make a new record. He want to make solo's album till he thinks it's time to go back with the peppers.

He wasn't even aware for Chickenfoot, and Chad hope he's happy. For Flea, I don't know what he thinks, but for Anthony, he said he would like to make a few new song with the red hot. All that means much.

So, this is reassuring because nothing indicate that the peppers are dead, and we can hope a new album, after John made some new one on his side.

  4. Nicky says:

Sounds to me that it's John who's objecting to stopping the hiatus at the minute, which is probably understandable, but it makes me wonder if there was any tension between any of them that might've lengthened the time spent on hiatus, and if there was,if it was centered around/involved John. After all, as much as I love the man, it wouldn't have been the first time.

  5. Martin101 says:

I hope the chili peppers break up, or at least John doesn't play with them again. I am not a pepppers fan at all, more of a John Frusciante fan. I became a fan of his even before I was ever a chili peppers fan. I'm just not into them as a whole as I am with John's solo stuff. So please, less Peppers and more John.

    • zabar says:

Peppers breaking up has nothing to do with John's solo work. He can and has made solo music parallel with being in the RHCPs. Yes, I like his solo work better too, but John wouldn't be what he is without the Peppers and the other way around. So I hope they'll sit down together one day and decide to just continue where they left off. And I would definitely hate it if they would do a huge come-back tour or something like that. Just continuing, that would be cool.

  6. frankie says:

Maybe (the Pepper's) history is gonna repeat itself. I hope not.

  7. Gilo says:

I'd rather them have a longer more extended break if it means that they all get a new perspective on music/life. Forcing them back together before they are ready would be bound to lead to a disaster. If they are progressing themselves in different ways we could end up with a fantastic Pepper album in a few years time.

  8. martina says:

it´s normal..i think.I love chili peppers and i´ll be waiting for new album one year or more,it doesn´t matter

  9. Tom Carter says:

Looks like they all want to return. John doesn't. Simple.

Would it be the Chili peppers without John? Personally i can't imagine anyone else playing with them, John is such a huge part of the band, obviously not just a guitarist. He can't be replaced.

If the others were to return without him (which looks like the only solution) then they'd have to come back with a new name and to play new material. It's happened before personally i think it would be refreshing for the band. John has been such a dominating force in their music, some would say too dominating, so maybe coming back with something fresh, funky and old school RHCP in the form of a completely new band would be a good idea.

    • frankie says:

I don't see why they'd have to change the band's name only because John's out.
They didn't change their name when Dave Navarro replaced John... and they were also the Peppers long before John even joined them.

      • Tom says:

True but John's contribution over 3 albums since returning and his contribution to live performances 99-2007 was completely different to 89-92 where he was much less in the shadows as a guitarist. Also, i don't think the Chilis are in the same position as a band. When DN took over, they were on the cusp of being a huge huge band after BSSM where as the band now are under now pressure to do that.

Im just speculating but basically i don't see anyway John can be replaced now, perhaps in 92 it was understandable. But would who on earth can match John? In my opinion (which is correct!!), John is the greatest living guitarist and amongst the most talented musicians in the world. There's no one making music like him. But in all honesty, the Chili peppers havent done anything remotely inspiring without John since 89. All their best moments have come from him.

Look at SA also - all the best songs on that album were driven by him. He also wrote Cant Stop, the chrorus to Dani Cali. and probably other countless songs that have defined their modern sound.

  10. john says:

Love John's music but he seems very immature when it comes to playing with the RHCP. It's no surprise to me that he doesn't want to play at this time. It's like 1992 Japan all over again. He has a huge mood swing and runs away...Hopefully he'll be back though.

  11. André Nascentes says:

I hope that they come back after a John's solo tour, with Josh!
Now that John had finished his album, I think that in the end of the year they could come back, starting 2010 in studio.

  12. Raindog says:

John has simply outgrown the band (or did the band outgrow Anthony Kiedis?). Sometimes, when listening to some of the lyrics, the idea of John being in that group makes me wince. I have nothing against the group, they simply have gone where they were going to go and are no longer relevant. At this point they can either break up and pursue other projects (like the Scar Tissue series Kiedis is developing for HBO and John's solo career) or they can continue and become a touring behemoth like other bands that should call it a day (Metallica, Aerosmith,...so on and so forth...). It is time for Frusciante to go it alone and live up to his potential.

  13. jule says:

well, it does seem to me like john is the only one who doesn't really want to start making chili pepper music again (although i don't know anything about anthony and flea's opinion). I would LOVE it, if the rhcp's would come back together again but it would just not be the same without john!!!! so, guys, especially john, take your time and when you're ready to start making more amazing music as the chili peppers again, do it!!! :D <3

  14. Taylor says:

Reading Scar Tissue helped me clarify whether or not they'd get back together; which I'd be respectful in both scenarios. The dudes have rocked the fucking boat for more than two decades now, a feat that has only been accomplished by a couple handful of bands. In Kiedis' bio, they really explain in depth about all the other split-ups and the pauses between albums, which seemed a lot more severe than the pause right now. Its clear that we are all Pepper junkies and can't go a day without listening or humming one of their tunes, so for now, I'm guessing they're taking it easy from being the badasses they are. But yes...waiting for this album...if there will be on...is pretty much torture.

  15. Missy Roark says:

These guys needs to check themselves and check their twelve steps. There is no room for the old addict 'ego' in this band. That's what creates all the animosity.....too many divas.

Love the Peppers........... together. John's solo stuff is uhm........ 'artistic'

  16. Allen says:

John's busy with his solo album's, Flea's busy with his music school and his custom basses, Chad busy with Chickenfoot and Anthony's probably visiting the Dhali Liama again so they are all occupied. Each of them love music and like to stay occupied and creative.I personally believe they are just resting and that when they are ready they will make the best album ever. Even if John is the reason they are on ''indefinite hiatus'' then so what! They all happily choose to go on hiatus in the first place so whats the big deal if one of them wants to keep it going, and for anyone who thinks John is acting ''childish'' then re-think your opinion because the situation isn't like that.John isn't being petty hes doing what he wants so give him a break and stop bringing up the past WE GET THE IDEA!
