This week is going to be a fest here on Invisible Movement, for reasons that should be obvious to you if you know what's coming up on Friday and, for some of you, if you get what else is this week. There will be random surprises here, on Twitter, Facebook, board and, duh, here, so you better watch out!
We're starting this off with a contest. The prize is a copy of The Heart Is A Drum Machine DVD which, as stated last week, features a 25-minute interview with John! Thanks to the nice people from Sneak Attack Media and Lightyear Entertainment, one lucky winner will be chosen on 09th March 2010.
Here's the official trailer, to remind you of what you're competing for:
What do you have to do?
- If you're on Facebook and Twitter, become a fan of The Heart Is A Drum Machine and/or follow it.
- Comment on this news item here (NOT elsewhere) and tell us all what music is, as this is what the film is all about after all! Be civilised and nice, be creative and write properly. You can add links, pictures and embed videos too, if that makes the whole thing easier for you. Make sure you leave your REAL email address, otherwise your entry won't be counted as there wouldn't be a way to contact you!
- Do not submit multiple times because there are ways to tell if you're cheating. Really.
On the 09th of March, all the valid entries will go in an Under The Bridge style hat and I'll pick the winner. I'll do a video of the draw to make sure no nipotism is involved in this. Moderators from the board are not eligible to participate in this contest. Also, conscience-wise: if you pre-ordered the DVD already, do not apply - give a chance to someone who did not. If you still want to answer the question, just clearly state you're not participating in the competition.
All clear? Good, let's go!
Actually, wait, here's a clear and nice screenie from the DVD! ^_^

Music, as described by other artists, is the purest expression of art, other types of art being considered secondary to music. At an evolutionary level, music served us well to firstly communicate between individuals, something which later on was done with the creation of language, therefore moving music to new heights of creativity and expression. That is when, I believe that music started to really develop towards what it is now. But, it is really a shame, as it has been expressed in a very interesting book called "This is your Brain on Music", that music has been limited to a certain group of people, artists of today, without people just eager to make any kind of music being able to take part in the business or be considered as "bad musicians".
Extending my idea on what music is, music has served to express our emotions and connect to them in our brain. Many of those who have experienced love have found that a certain song really connects with that type of feeling you're experiencing, and that you can feel that important person next to you with just hearing the marvelous piece of music. Or the feeling of sadness and loneliness can be compensated with another piece of music that expresses such feeling. In composition part of music, the sounds that you create are an extension of your language and expression, since the arrangements of some notes create feelings that may be different from those same notes but arranged in a different way. That is why, in my opinion, looking at a song in a technical way loses its original value of expression and the feeling that was conveyed in the song. Although, such technical aspects shouldn't be underlooked whenever you are creating a song, since these work well to extend your ability to express yourself.
In conclusion, and to not make this opinion more extensive than what it already is, music is a language, a type of expression that has the roots in the feelings, the opinions, the thoughts, etcetera of every human being, making each song incredibly unique and personal, but with the ability of communicating a universal message. Music shouldn't be limited to a certain group of people, instead to anyone who feels the urge to express themselves in ways that can be abstract or simple, and music isn't something that should be criticized by virtousity, compositional skills or if it is pop or underground or something like that. Instead, the criticisim of music should be personal, each person deciding what they like to hear and what they don't, and that is why music shouldn't be a business that appeals to the masses, instead a true form of art that can be enjoyed fully.
Music, to me, is life. Everything that lives makes sound, and an accumulation of sounds is music. The nervous tap of a foot creates a musical rhythm. One's lungs contracting and expanding creates a rhythm. The buzz of a city at night is also music, with car horns, angry shouts and kids playing all adding to the mix.
Not only is music life, but music is also a beautiful way to interact with fellow beings. 2 people who may not ever meet each other can both be connected by passion for a certain sound, a certain style or philosophy. There are no rules as to what music one can listen to, or what music can be to someone. Music can be inspiring, a wake-up call for revolution. Music may be thought-provoking, philosophical and intellectual, or it can be comedic, goofy and ridiculous. There is no emotion, no feeling that could not be described through music.
I guess the music is a magic thing. Emerged like a kind of art and, over time, became more than it. The music can be everything to people. It may be a way to unload the hate and at the same time, a way to fill the heart with love. This power make the music magic.
But in recent times, i've seen people using the music like a slave, like a dog stuck on a leash. Not to mention the use of music as a form of profit. But what i mean is the way that the people are enjoying the music today. They listen to music on mp3 players and Ipods, sometimes talking, reading or studying, not paying attention at the message of the music (when it really have a message). I mean, its like a person walking in the street holding a Picasso painting and between a conversation or a cross the street she quicly looks to the board. Or in another situation, the person has a DVD Player watching a movie working or signing a contract. What they will capture from those works? That's what i think.
About this movie I read the John's comment and i was proud to be fan of him. His vision about the feeling and criativity is fantastic. Thats what i think too. The people need to understand that the music is nothing more than ourselves. And who make a music that is not like you, just to get money, is a lier, a fake human being.
Closing my comment, there are people who think that music is a hobby. But the real hobby is to feel the feelings that music gives us.
Music is rhythm and melody. Sound in time. Like any art, I think if you have the intent to make music, then you are making music.
You can study music for forever and still not learn everything. There are people who spend their whole lives trying to master classical piano, or Indian classical sitar, or rock and roll guitar or drums. Different types of music include different types of rhythms, harmonies, and structures. For example, a pop song usually is in a major or minor key, and has verses and choruses and sometimes a bridge or a middle 8. With the blues there is 12 bar blues that uses certain chords for a certain number of bars, and the blues has it's own scale they traditionally use. Just like all poetry doesn't even have to rhyme, it's not like there are any rules that makes something not music. But there are structures, just like there are sonnets, limericks, etc., that musicians learn and often write within.
Learning to read and write music is also a challenge.
But then you see a three year old rocking out on the ukelele on you tube and you know it is also simple. People have an innate sense to want to express themselves. As I leanred in a Talib Kweli song there's a proverb "if you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing." You ever watch the pure joy of a little kid drumming on pots and pans around the house, or a kid first learning to sing their favorite song and you know that musical expression is just something people are born with.
I think music can bring people together. When people all make music together and join the same rhythm it is magical. People's bodies get into the same rhythm. It's always fun for that reason to make music with other people, or be in the audience with a whole bunch of people experiencing that at the same time.
And there of course is the expressive attribute to music. How many songs can say in just a few short minutes what someone could probably never find the words to say? People can hear music with no lyrics, or with lyrics in other languages that they don't know, and yet still get 100% the emotion the musician is trying to convey. Is it calm or energetic? Is it happy or sad? Is it joyous or angry? You can always tell. And it's a way to take these everyday emotions that sometimes leave us frustrated and elevate them into something important and beautiful. And also express to others that they aren't alone. Even if you haven't been though the exact same situation, (and who has, everyone is different), just being able to see that emotion being expressed by that person can make you feel less alone when you also experience strong and troubling emotions.
It's actually harder to talk about it than I thought but I hope I did an OK job. :submit comment:

Music is undefinable as a whole, yet everyone has their own interpretation. To me, It's such a beautiful, transcendental thing that I think it's impossible to fully put it in complete words. I can only say what it means to me. As (i think) John said one time, "Music is infinite." It is made everywhere and in everything, and it will always be made whether other human beings have the desire to listen to it or not.
Music is there for me when I need it. It understands without sympathizing, makes me think about my life without being condescending, and gets me through problems by giving me an outlet to get away from them. I can put on one of my favorite records or get lost in an instrument and forget about everything for a while.
Music is making something out of nothing, sound where there once was none. You can copy someone's chord progressions and lyrics exactly but still sound different because your own style was put into it.
All in all, I think music is special, incredible, amazing, original...there are too many words to describe it's impact on my life and I'll never forget the effect it's had on me.
Music is what i think sounds good at the moment it enters my head and it attracts me. it doesn't have to have a repetitive nature to it but most of the time it does but that's not a bad thing. as long as the piece is interesting and sounds fresh, or has a familiarity to it that you know was inspired by other bodies of work and you appreciate what that person has done to create it. stories are nice.
I once attended the concert of a very interesting traveling guitar player. This particular musician made his life by playing his creations, alone, to small crowds. Beautiful music poured out of this man's guitar leaving the small crowds astonished. He, himself, alone on a stage was able to bring life and beauty to his audience. During his performance, the musician told the audience that every night after performing he would return to his hotel room alone and prepare for the next day’s concert by practicing on his guitar. He was not married; he had no children, and he was much too old to pursue any of those endeavors. His situation bothered me a bit. I wondered to myself, how and why someone would live alone and still manage to imagine and create the beautiful music that this musician did? I thought that loneliness and despair would obviously plague a performer’s artistic creativity; that without love, an artist has nothing. Then, after pondering, I concluded that there is only one answer to the question. At the end of the concert, I was convinced that what I had seen between the musician and his music was true love. I saw an emotion that was not created but shared; a companionship of the purest form; a give and take relationship without limits, thus, true love. The music was an element of its own; something that could be loved and that could love back. The musician was never lonely because he always was in the company of music and his love with it was what gave him the perfect artistic balance. To me, this is proof that music is more than just human creation. Music is, has, and always will be… love.
music is feeling.
music for me is a very unique thing. it can be one thing to this person and other thing to other person. music is also an expression, a way to be true to who you are, a way to express yourself as a human.it is something that never ends. music is also tradition as all kinds of places in the world has diferent culture for example: chinese music is not the same as african music and not the same as european music. people see music as a way of making themself special by using music to express their culture.music is also connected to eras in the world like people who write about the diferences between rich and poor, black and white, strong and weak, and so on.music is also a way of protesting about history and politics. music is also connected to religion for example: in church you have a gospel choir, in mosqes you have the imam who sings the koran prayers and in synagogue you have the rabbai who sings all kinds of prayers too so in a way singing is also connecting with god in different ways and believes. music is also an impact. the way you influence people with your music for good or bad, the energy that comes from the music can make people feel better. it is also efects the brain for example: in a lot of cases people who were in coma woke up after listening to their favourite music for a few days.
Scientifically, music is simply vibrations arranged in such a way that holds melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics. But beyond that, it's the ultimate form of artistic expression. It can be anywhere from beautiful to appreciably ugly, and even both extremes at the same time. Moreso than any art form, it captures the voice (figuratively and sometimes literally) of the artist.
Music is more expressive than any other art form. Through simple melodies and lyrics it can simply be "what it is", real and relatable. And at the same time, harmonies and more subtle melodies can capture a mystic feeling too abstract for any words to ever properly describe. One note can cover countless thoughts, and that's why music is humanity's most important form of expression.
Music is love
Music is anger
Music is passion
Music is everywhere
Music is anything you want it to be...
Music is the language of the soul, not everybody speaks it well, but everyone understands it.
i'm so glad you won the competition
yours was my favorite out of what i read.
Music is what you want it to be
Its everywhere in the air
Its now and tomorrow
Its neither here nor there
Music is expression
Music is everything and nothing
running
life
Music is my life.
It's my way to think, talk, walk, do things, feel things and love.
I think that music is part of your soul and you got to love it and to have one to be a living person.
I subscribe to the Oscar Wilde view that, from the point of view of form, the type of all the arts is the art of the musician. Music is very close to our souls or any other kind of entity related to our emotional nature or sense of identity. Honestly, it is useless sometimes to explain Art in mere words because that's what Art is all about...the fourth dimension, funky monks!
Music is a form of self-expression.
Is the way I express, I live it, I feel it, I breath it, because without it, I can't live.
It's like a unconditional love. The form of express the joy of live, of fell, even of love.
I love it.
There is this saying that goes: "Everything in this world can be explain by mathematic equations and formulas. Since all psychology can be explained by biology, and all biology can be explained by chemistry, as all chemistry can be explained by physics which in turn is explained by mathematics."
So what? Are the numbers on a paper... our universe? Could really the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything be as simple as i.e. the unit 42?
Yes, but not on a paper... We can also break down mathematics to a simpler form.
Music is made stritcly out of frequencies alone. And mathematics is explained by frequencies, and thereby explained by MUSIC. The unit 1 i.e. is the whole lapse of a waveform, a frequency, the unit 42
is 42 whole lapses of a waveform.
I say that music is everything... Everything in a sense that noone can truly undarstand. From the sounds you get from vibrating the air, to the smallest particles man has found, and all the way to the greatest picture of our universe... is music.
And that's why I should win the prize =P
its not that mathematics can be explained by music. its the other way around. mathematics is the analysis of relation, and relation between an artist and anything else is what constitutes art.
Incase i repeat some points i've said before my name on the forum is phantom
Music is the highest form of human expression, unlike other forms of expression music is not trapped by the 4 dimensions (3 of space and the 4th of time) that we experience as testimony to our 5sensual dimensions.
other art forms project something maybe a vision into a physical format like a painting. Music however transends these trappings of the physical world and floats somewhere in between...

Music also seems to be the only artistic expression that other animals are capabable of such as whales and birds. This suggests that music predates mankinds development into "higher beings"
My philiosophy rationalises that all things in the universe are one and the same and that music is a vibration of the universe that we as personifications of the universe are able to register these symbols in our percieved minds.
It is also my philosophy that there as many philosphies and "perceptions of existence" as there are living beings whether thats a tree an ant or you and me...
An interesting idea came to me the other day that when you listen to a song and although when it finishes the bass may be on note 78 and the guitair note 89 they appear to exist and end at the same time. Perhaps this is why as living creatures whilst we live at different ages for differnt lengths from insects that live a day to 70yr old people we co-exist at the same time.
I believe that good music is good music and bad is bad. The things that make it good & bad are much more to with intentions than outcomes. The thing that makes music great is how well it reflects that intention which either comes through forces internally or externaly
I listen to 40 albums a week its my best friend. It allows me to be comfortable with my pain after all "existance is suffering" and i have learnt after much heartache to be content with it. I realised through music that my pain although in alot of cases was situational (december my friend died at 18) most of it stems from the fact i am alive and that in itself is unbelievably overwhelming.
Quite simply through apparent randomness and feeling an urge to buy from amazon.com a copy of curtains by some guy called john frusciante (who i had no idea who he was or what he sounded like) apart from rhcp's californication, by the way, SA, it has changed my life and i looked forward to life with and around music.......
Much love to everyone
Music is expression, is love.
No matter the genres or styles there, because music is expression, is love of life is happiness, is the way to feel and to be honest with yourself
To me music is something that's hard to define, it's been around longer than we humans have, it can be expressed in so many ways, it's not necessarily a catchy beat with some rhyming lyrics. It can be a whistle, or a simple hum, it can be the rhythm of a train or the blowing of the wind. (urgh, corny. sorry)
The thing i love about music is that EVERYONE has an opinion on it, from babies to oldies everyone has a song they like and don't. You could go up to any stranger in the world, pick a known song and discuss it, It creates conversation. It also brings people together, whether you're at a gig with half a million people screaming the lyrics to your favourite anthem or at home with a special someone having a dance. I could spend all day saying what music can be, but I don't think i could ever to define it.
If i had to put it into one sentence I'd say 'music is emotion.' To me that's what it is, to put it loosely what i listen to depends on how I'm feeling, if i feel sad I'll put on a slow gentle song and if I'm feeling happy I'll put on a fast energetic song. It's the way a person feels or has felt when they wrote the song. They say love is the strongest emotion that we feel, whether it be for family, friends or a partner. Without doing any research I'm willing to guess that over a quarter of all the songs ever created are about love, you may have to peel back a few layers to find it in some more than others. But I'm sure you'll find it.
So if music is emotion, and emotion is love, you love music because it's emotional and you can relate to it.
Music, in my opinion, is everything around us. But it depends on us - what we can hear - it's our choice. It's the best way to show how we see the world, how are we feeling in this particular moment.
Music it's like our best friend, who is around no matter what, and a friend who understand us more than any other person. If we are happy, we're listening to happy notes, if we are mad we probably chose something heavier and we listen it louder. If we want to spend very special time with person who we love, we want to hear some quiet and peaceful music, etc. But the point is, that music makes us to feel everything more intense. It has a great power that brings memories and that helps people to get through the worst days in their lives. It gives us time to be ourselves and stop pretending.
It's the best language in the world, language that can join people, no matter where they are from. Music it's also a history of the world. You can find there everything , every event - because that events are what is pushing musicians to create and write more and more: peace, war, love, tragedies, friendships, families....
It's also a great passion,a passion that even deafness can't stop (look at Beethoven). And no matter if you're a musician or just a listener, all you have to do is to shush for a few seconds, cause You can be suprised of what You might hear.
To me, music isn't perfect. It's a force, both dark and light. It chooses you, then it haunts you, changes you, makes you vulnerable. You are never really satisfied by it. It takes you to the highest places and leaves you there. It gives you the pain and the relief, and that pursuit is something you can never give up.
Music is the purest way to communicate a strong emotion, you can't really put into words what music is, it's like energy transfered through the air that moves you more than any words can say and its pure excitement.
To me, music is the exploration of sounds, with boundaries or not, in which every human being receives and generates a reaction according to the way they perceive music.
Music is the purest form of comunication, creating bonds between beings without being constricted by language, ideologies or even the difference of species.
For us humans i dont think there is anybody who actually could say that he or she doesnt like music. Music is embeded subconciously in our body and minds, to any rythm or beat, instinctevely someone dances, the relationtship formed by music and spirit is so sacred that trascends any kind of imposed definition.
To conclude I can only say that, personally, music has made me grow in ways i couldnt have grown on my own, as a practicing musician, it lets me create an output for my feelings, it lets me react to the music I hear and be able to feel the creative process of music, whether is creating a composition or improvising, the feeling of creating something new out of your spirit and mind makes you realize that music, even the simplest form, is simply divine.
Music sounds as hard to define as Art, to me. So I may only express what it makes me think of, in a very incomplete way.
Music is not a simple sound. It is a combination of sounds, sometimes balanced with blanks.
It comes from any proof of life and is produced by motions, from the blood beating in a body to the wind rocking the trees and their leaves or changing the mood of the sea.
It both comes from nowhere and everywhere, just as life does.
Music can be made out of an emotion, a feeling coming from deep down, from who knows where. It may then be made counciously or not, depending on the grip emotions have on you.
It may as well be made to create a feeling. Anyway, where there is a feeling, there must be life.
Music may also and then replace speech and create a universal communication, transcending languages, just as much as feelings are universally shared, free from any kind of words.
Music may differ from noise depending on each other's appreciation.
Anyhow, life and music seem indissociable. Music comes from Life, and even keeps some alive. After all, why do birds sing ? And isn't this life a bittersweet symphony ?
I'm going to relate this to myself because I feel it's easiest to do so... Music, in my opinion, is one of the only things in my life that is completely pure in every sense. It's just the only thing I ever want to focus on or give my full attention to, and I'm incredibly passionate about it. Saying it in words doesn't even do the trick. I just feel it. I only feel a connection to music at times. I don't know why. It hit me back when I was about 12, and I'm sixteen now. Four years of self-realization... Anyway, I never really liked music so much, or cared for it. Once I took the chance with classic rock (my mother suggested it), it really spoke to my inner being, and my inner fate. It took my life and really changed it. It transformed me to be in touch with the world at a much more vulnerable level. I care about things more deeply than before, and my heart goes out to this whole universe. Music gives us (or at least most of us music enthusiasts) a laid-out understanding of pure bliss. Music...is...infinite. Thank you for listening, and have fun...being musical. Have fun being who you are: a delicate existence that radiates the way of life.
Music will be one of the extremely few legacies left behind by humans long after they disappear,
Feeling is the only thing that matters. Feeling can give meaning to life. Music is a way to channel and transfer feeling. For me, music can give meaning to life.
Music is life. It's like when you listen to it your brain is filled with some kind of stuff, which makes you feel something different, something that makes you jump, cry, send shivers down your back and so on. The best thing you could feel. I really want to know how would John answer to this question.
My recent post Bombastic Meatbats
John I love you! <3
This one can't classify as an entry - rejected, sorry. =/
Music is a door to another dimension.
What music is?
Music is my life, my passion. It's what drives me. It's how I speak when words escape me. It's always in my head; playing loud & clear, like the score from a never-ending movie. Filling in the blanks. Resonating from deep within.
Music is there to comfort me when my heart is bleeding. It's my life jacket when I'm drowning in a sea of despair. It's my gospel when I have gone astray. It's my cry when the world is crashing in & my strength when I fight back. It's the joy in the celebration & the emotions that can not be described. It's the feeling of love, romance, desire, lust and need all rolled into one. It's a look inside, deep into ones being.
Music is magical. It can transport you back in time, to a place or event. It can remind you of a person you haven't thought of in years or one you wish you could forget. It marks special occasions, and records tragedies. It mourns death and rejoices birth. It send messages of life, love, hatred, anger, repression & spirituality.
Music is everywhere, speaking, telling a story. Reflecting the times. Spreading elation & remorse. Sharing your darkest secrets with the world. Confiding in the rhythms. The beat carrying you away, away from it all. To your own secret paradise that only few would only truly ever get a peek of.
Music is its own language. Pounding out its universal message. One which can be shared with all, despite translation barriers. It's the one thing that can bring us all together.
Music consumes me, it swallows me whole & wraps me in it's melodic tones. It engulfs me in its gossamer web of notes. Pulsing through my veins & dancing thru my soul. It echos in my head and rings in my ears. It drives who I am and what I want to be. It guides me thru the darkness and leads me to light. It heals me when I'm broken. Broken beyond repair.. when there is no one to comfort me, to wipe my tears, to lend a helping hand or shoulder to lean on. When all else fails music IS there. There to rescue me & set me on the right path again.
So when I think of what music is; ultimately music IS everything... Everything to me..
Music is life.
It's something that means something completely different to everyone, but is valid in all of those ways.
It's just the most beautiful thing in the world. I can't explain it.
Of course that's why I'm a musician- I can't describe anything without a guitar.
It's just everything I am. It's what I eat, breathe, dream and think about.
I know I wouldn't be who I am today without music; thus I wouldn't be anyhting.
Music is the form of living, breathing.
A way to get in touch with yourself and all the energies that are existing because of the music.
I really like listening music and listening many different bands and artists.
Music connects people.
Music makes our planet safer.
Music is so good so it's hard to describe it .....
John Frusciante is music god.
I can remember the first time I ever listened to the song ants by john frusciante . It was as if that song literally controled me .for the duration of that song it felt as if the world was gone . It was one of the best feelings I've ever had my whole body was in bliss . And that's what I think music is , it is just raw emotion expressed in sound. BTW. I'm writing this to share my opinion I'm not gonna enter the competition I'm probably just gonna buy the DVD when it comes out LOL
We walk for long and tedious walks through life only to wind up on the other end of narrow and treacherous rope. It is a rope that is often manipulated, tampered with, cheated and abused. So why does it feel like we have left this rope when we experience art. Art is the leap of faith we take in life which brings us to a middle ground that nothing else can really do. Now art can be a lot of things. It can the simple act of looking into a cup of tea and letting that image take you away. I really do believe that art is meant to take us away. One of the most potent and sensual senses we have is to hear. When hearing and listening is used to experience an art. This is when music first develops in my mind. The clicking of my fingers upon this keyboard is one step closer to music. I could record this with the microphones laced throughout my room and play orgran over it and that could be MY art. MY song. MY music. Music begins with the ears.
It's the control of these sounds that is so fascinating. It is the fact that the human race has even gone as far as to even build instruments that are used to manipulate wonderful and exotic sounds that trigger our brains in ways still baffling today. I listen to music everywhere I go. Whether I am using my ipod or my disc man(yes I still have one) or my newly purchased vinyl player. I literally surround myself in sounds and I play them loud. Yes, so very loud. When I was in the whom my mother would put Beethoven to her stomach so I could listen along. Nowadays I play in multiple bands and work with multiple instruments. I am going "Recording Arts Canada" next year to master my skills in sound engineering. Just like so many others out there. I have dedicated my life to music. Or has music dedicated its life to us?
So I often ask myself why this has happened. Why do so many of us dedicate out life to art. I think it is because of the freedom of it all. We live through our senses. It's naturally such a beautiful and normal thing to do. The feelings that come from listening and creating music at any level are feelings not shown in anything else on this planet. It's when our minds choose art. I really think music will live forever. As long as sound exists, music will exist. Even if the human race is completely destroyed(and I can assure you it won't be destroyed by artists!), the birds will keep chirping and the waves will keep flowing. Sound is music. Life is sound. Music is the life sound which we cherish to climb to the next plateau.
Music is everything.
oh there are lots of beautiful explanations here:) to me personally, and i kinda stole the expression as i've seen it elsewhere before, to me music is love is life. music takes me to another world and that's the world i would want to live in. it actually doesn't matter if it's trash metal or hip-hop or folk music, because every music has its merits. i love the feelings running through my body and soul when i'm listening to music. i think those are feelings everyone needs to experience. those are feelings indescribable with words, those can be only described with music. so i won't even try to give an example, simply put on your favourite (or less favourite) music and breath it in as deep as you can. i advise you to close all the doors, cover all windows and lie down on the floor with your eyes closed in the dark. to have no disturbing stuff around you. i have my favourite spot on the floor of my room where i like to be when listening to music.
also, if you're a bit experienced/learned in music theory, you can find a much deeper level of wonderful magic in the music you listen to. there can be chords or rhythms or instruments or backing vocals (backing vocals are the best part of music
) or effects or structural ideas or lots else that can make you smile or even laugh out loudly (that's the two things i've been constantly doing when i first listened to stadium arcadium. not in the dark, as i was reading the lyrics, but all alone in my room with my headphones on, i was heard laughing through half of the record:) like the guitar bits (i guess) after the first chorus of warlocks. that one i particularly remember).
and if you happen to be playing on the stage. you are playing with others, luckily your friends (i feel blessed to have my chili peppers tribute band in which i play with my best friends who i've known for like 12 years now and they are perhaps closer to me than my own brother. if you've heard about 'chemistry' in a band. that's totally true. you don't need to be a very good player of your instrument. you only need to connect. if you succeed, it is of the least importance that you are actually playing music). and if you happen to have a vibe between you and your bandmates, that gives you (and them also) a feeling of elevation. like you are a foot above ground. and you know that 'anytime there's no ground below you, you're in the sky'. and this feeling takes over the audience as well. and that is the best there is. when you are able to share the loves and pains and everything inside through amplifiers and voltages, through the vibrations everyone feel when your feet touch the ground after a jump, through the mistakes you make because your best friend's just bumped into you as you play, through the sight of the singer kissing your forehead or the drummer counting for a song in french (which only he speaks), all these things combined with the sound of the bridge pickup of a fender stratocaster or/and the creaking of the chain on a kick drum pedal or the three of you singing beautiful harmonies in the quiet bit of your song.. i could continue forever. and when you see all of these reflected on the faces of people you don't even know (or the ones you do), that is the greatest gift life can hold for you. (it is also true for when you are alone with a friend in your room and you start playing the piano and you see your friend lying back with her/his eyes closed, or when you and your friends all bring along your acoustic guitars for new year's eve and the rest of the bunch sits on the ground around you, smiling and listening.) i haven't felt any feeling more beautiful than the ones only music can give me, and i don't want to do anything as much as to share these feelings with as many people and for as much of the time as i possibly can. thank you for reading.
oh, i almost forgot about singing in a choir:) i sadly didn't take a picture when i was once standing on the top of a stair-like stage in a huge church in wolgast, germany, with 200 guys and girls below me, all of us singing a beautiful gospel. shivering, shivering:) everyone should try that once:) or singing before a mass where a baptism also takes place..
John, I would like to give birth to your childs, I love <3 you!
I like the idea of someone who wants someone's "childs" pretending to be me...might be useful for a horror film someday. GOOOO CHILDS!
Music to me is infinite, Meaning its possiblities are endless. There is a never-ending amount of knowledge and feelings you can receive from it. For me the most beautiful part is the unexplainable aspects of music. The feelings you get when you hear a piece of music that means so much to you. How your body reacts to it, how your emotions shift while this piece is playing. The memories it can bring up etc etc the same goes for a musician who is creating a piece of music. All of this and the realization that when you are the one creating the piece, know your not alone in the act. There is a force in there beyond our control and to me that is beautiful. You get lost in it while creating it and while listening back to it. Your hearing things that you werent hearing while making it. Your feeling new things that you were in tune with while making it. Its very hard to put into words but i'm sure that anyone who has a deep connection with music knows this feeling very well.
Music in hour sphere
I can see eh
that's permeation
it's my lady's doing
alas- it was good but shes gone now (! eh oh !! eh an ohn ! )
all she leaves behind is her shadow when she gone
I can see it in the mountain range
it lasts but will fall
It's a sign that goes to show
she built up on again,
she did it so i could grow
i guess the sun is shining
because last time it was down
my lady brought me an electr5ic soul this time
and a garden to get lost in aeround
she called her brother jackson
and asked for david two
she said Danny's in the woods again
Whats he always have to do ?
when they found me I was dancing
I told them i was singing stories too
I've be climbing up these these stairs all day
I'm tired so I'm through,
Ill try again another day when the sun is my friend sue
maybe then it will be than
and what was will be
Ahhh great timing lets have some cake
soft crack and land it jack
a fall is coming brace, ohhhhh!!!! ummfffack
from so far up above the clouds
i came to touch this adjustable ground
I won't stay forever
the stairs keep building
I have to climb along side
i fall as i grow the facts are skewed though
Music has an infinity of hidden treasures which can be unveiled anytime simply by listening to a piece of music. Silence prevails before and after the music happens, but in the meantime, we are exposed to something that could be described as the fast track to our deeper feelings. Whatever that flash of power is, it just goes straight to the soul, talks to it, and moves things there that couldn't be reached in any other way. What is fascinating about the whole process, is that it undeniably has something of a mystical element in it, since not a single scientist can explain the phenomenon in its entirety. And we are all unanimously driven towards the centre of attraction that this powerful artistic manifestation can create. It definitely has something that other ways of making art haven't. Exactly what is what remains to be discovered. Or maybe not.
Music is an expression of raw human emotion that comes out through a musical instrument, a tool to express this raw emotion. it has infinite power to move us people in any way, be it mental, physical, or spiritual. It is almost God talking through us.
Music is life
It's everywhere and everything
It can forever change your life
It can take you to a better place
It's a part of your own little universe
It makes you laugh and cry
It makes you FEEL
It's happiness and sadness
It's joy and despair
It makes you want to live when you think it's all over
It prevents you from doing unnesessary and stupid things that harm you or somebody else
It saves you.
Music is everything. Music is nothing. The harmonies of life are limitless. Music is not tangible, you can't touch it, you can't see it. Vibrations. Chemical reactions. When you sit in silence and feel peace, that is music. When you hear birds singing in the morning after being up all night, that is music. Everything that is beautiful to you. Everything that you hate.
"WANT A REASON! TAKE YOUR PICK! MUSIC IS MY LIFE!" By: Rachel Anne Rosson
I have other covers currently in the works with the three different bands I'm working and performing with right now such as stuff from 'Led Zeppelin,' 'John Lennon,' 'The Mars Volta,' 'Pink Floyd,' 'Red Hot Chili Peppers,' 'The Muse,' 'The Doors,' 'Janis Joplin,' 'The Moody Blues,' and many others, but up until now I have been playing in a two-man band I started up called The Dueling Dragons. It's me on vocals and the songwriter, and the rhythm guitarist and my lead guitarist is my best friend Holly Rebecca Bryant (she goes by Holly Houston for stage) who has a strong musical background and already played piano and French horn very well and two years ago I taught her how to play guitar and now she is phenomenal and puts people to shame who have played for years- like me! I started trying to play guitar around the age of nine coming from a very musically talented family who all play guitar and my dad and I play piano. I really started playing at the age of eleven when my mom showed me my first chords and taught me 'Old McDonald,' the same song I started Holly on two years ago and now she is teaching me all kinds of things on guitar and understands it to a whole new degree than I will probably ever be able to! However, the point of my story is to tell you that I have been a singer/songwriter/guitarist my whole life as the pieces fell into place and last year around this time I found John Frusciante's newest album 'The Empyrean' and it not only changed my life but quite possibly saved it! Since then I have made him my official guitar hero and as a musician and I have filled my days with everything John and spread the word about him and shared his music and his inspiration and his stories with tons of people everywhere I go. I have recruited so many fans it's unbelievable and one of the biggest ways in which I have been doing that is up until now I have been playing with The Dueling Dragons out n Beechgrove, TN every Friday night at The Lakewood Market and Grille and have only played John Frusciante covers exclusively besides one 'Big Brother and The Holding Company' song I have played for years. I play mostly originals since I have so many songs I have written (a couple albums worth that I am working on recording at this time in my brother's studio in Madison, TN, and so far have a two-track demo that is one of my 'Double Songs' that is John Frusciante's 'After The Ending' cover with my addition/reply to it 'I Won't Let You Down' which makes it actually like two songs in one or just one really long song but has been originally recorded as two tracks until we put the two together) but when I play my John Frusciante covers it is wonderful because if I don't say- 'This is by John Frusciante' they think it is all my own work because his songwriting and mine is so similar, not exactly alike, but close enough that I have to make sure to give him credit or I do such a good job making his songs my own that people give me all the credit for it- but it means I am spreading his music to them without them even knowing they are liking him at first because they already love me and if they think it is by me they accept it off the bat and when they find out it is him after I sing it and tell them who that was by they are like- "Well, that guy must be really good! I thought YOU wrote that!" Well, here is an example of one my 'Double Songs' on YouTube, I have a lot of videos on Myspace, YouTube, and Facebook and this is one that people really enjoy hearing although in this particular video the first part of 'Unreachable' is cut off but you can hear about the second half of it and my addition to it. I hope if nothing else, someone is inspired by my story and I hope you enjoy what you hear! Like I said, music is my life! And I love music, therefore, I love my life! Thankyou.[youtube C_3nMJd87rU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_3nMJd87rU youtube]
Hehe I thought I posted this this tuesday but luckil I decided to look through the comments and saw mine wasn't there. And luckily it was saved on the computer.
I will not tell you the history of music, not the genre or the theory underlying much of the music we humans have created. Music floats in the air, the forests and in the water. Music has always existed and will always exist no matter how long humans can survive on the planet we are destroying.
Music is love that you can feel everywhere, life that you can feel everywhere, it’s something that exists in everybody’s souls. Yet, it’s mine.
Music is everything. But the expression, the word music, is something we humans made up. A tree is magic, beautiful and filled with life; it’s everything that music is.
A tree is music. A tree could be music if somebody sings about it. A tree can never be music.
What is it that determines whether a tree is music or not?
Music is love that you can feel everywhere, life that you can feel everywhere, it’s something that exists in everybody’s souls. Yet, it’s mine.
....Every human being has it’s own music, it’s own way to look at music and all humans is told something different by the musicians. It doesn’t matter who made the music in the first place, my music is mine because of what I can find in it or what I relate it to. Somebody else’s music is never my music, even though we might listen to the same bands. My music is secret. My music is my place to hide, my dreams at night, the sun, the water, the wind and everything that matters to me.
My dreams are never the same as somebody else’s dreams and what matters to me is never exactly the same as what matters to somebody else. That is why your music isn’t my music and your mother’s music isn’t Jim Morrison’s music.
Music is so close to the hearts of the people; yet it’s made by vibrations in the air. Vibrations made by the humans. I’ve wondered my whole life how something so weak can produce something so strong. Something that captures me completely and makes me feel more than everything I’ve ever felt; more than I thought could exist.
I will tell you what music is for me, though I need to present my way of thinking of it, which is connected to thinking of life and the Universe. I know it may take long, but finally we will reach the music explanation, which I think does make sense and you will like, enjoy
Thank you for reading.
Let me explain my view on life, where music takes the central place. There is only one biggest force in the Universe- the world soul. It has the most power, it pierces everything, it consists of gentle vibes connected with each other and effecting everything around, working on a matching principle. Every live being is a manifest of this force. Every live being transmits this form of energy. We are transmitters, who convert the energy, who take steps and make a cause to the Universe, collaborating with the force. It is strongly connected to our physical build. Evolution created us along with the energy, being affected by it. We, as human beings, are the most advanced at the evolutioin level and we transmit most energy, additionally analizing and understanding it, while calling it our consciousness or higher self. Indeed it is what makes us unique. Along with our bodies' well developed physical and chemical systems, we are doing well in transforming all kinds of energy analizing, investigating and trying to explain them.
The most common event on the Earth is calling this force of the Universe a God- praise it, worship, say prayers to it or even kill in the name of . As for me, I believe there are many, though very hidden, truths in every religion, which all go into the making one common sense, meaning and base. I consider this force a feeling, which is mainly given as the source of everything- LOVE. In many religions it is equal to their god.
Let's move on the main question- what is MUSIC? According to all this stuff I have said before- it is an energy. The thing is, people have one problem - we want to name everything, looking for a fine definition to something that is unnameable, eternal, that cannot be named because it doesn't have any permanent build. It doesn't exist as a matter. I'd like to quote the words: 'Illusion is what you see. Magic is what you feel'. I am likely to say: 'Sound is what you hear. Music is what you feel'- woudln't you agree with that? People have invastigated the build of something that they are able to read with the senses and called it a sound, explaining it is a wave with a specific frequency and amplitude and saying that music is built of it. It is okay while making a reference to a sound definition. However, music is something more. I consider it not as something built of sound waves, but the eternal sphere in the Universe, that lives its own way. It's the other world, pierced with nothigness, still full of life and power. To experience music, you have to turn off all of your senses, which are made to help us read the realistic world we live in, to touch, hear or smell things. Though you cannot hear the music (you can hear the sound), the only way to get to know it is to feel it. You have to separate from the physical world and start to read on the vibes level. You have to start transmitting music, become one with it, become music, letting it in to your mind, letting it affect you.
For me, music is equal to love and god. It is all one, because it is all that one, biggest force in the Universe, the biggest form of energy. The Universe is built of dimensions, it is full of them. Every energy lives its own way at its own level- specific dimension. Music is one of them (to me equal to =love=god- the same kind of vibes and a frequency). It also explains why we do not like the same kind of sounds. It depends on what energy vibes every of us transmits.
Look, music differs from other forms of art. As the only one, it is alive. Unlike others, it can be experienced at the very moment of making it. On concerts, where artists can be jamming, they make it spontaneously, on an emotion, on a feeling. What does happen then? The audience is experiencing music with them. Everyone becomes a transmitter of this energy, they are all at the same place in the unmaterial Universe, at the same state of mind, because they all are tend to transmit similar vibes. Artists, making those music reach the same place within each other, they are moving there, creating the specific sound, which is a factor to create the feeling and the right energy called music. Comparing music to another form of art which can be painting or photography, not many painters have reached the point where the process of making their piece of art itsel is interesting, inspiring, involving. We are more likely to admire ready painting, which differs from music that it is still, permanent, it doesn't change, doesn't move. Even if you stop looking at it, stop using your senses, you will not feel anything as strong as music provides you with, because music can .live within us, with our Selfs, even if we stop hearing sounds- connecting factors. To admire paintings, you need your eyes, as well as to admire other forms of art. Despite the music, which you can become one with, which you can experience, feel it, being at one with this special place, leaving your body, turning on your mind, your transmitting higher Self.
So music=love=god -the world soul- for me. It is the only one, eternal force, making you feel different emotions every time you feel it. It takes you to a different place and state of mind, where you move with your thoughts, and vibrate along with it. As your feelings and emotions are energies too, you can use this force to express these feelings vibing at the same level. Through music you can express your love, sadness, joy, grief, because they are energies, too. Every pleasant ethereal energy is equal to music. It is just another form of energy, if we want to name it, music is another feeling. It is the world soul=love=god, whatever you call it.
I am sorry but my definition didn't fit to one comment, so there is still my text, a continuation, right below. It is not another, multiple attempt, just a continuation.
ok now it is right above
For me, music is much more than waves going through the air. The music is a force that is between ordinary and extraordinary, between the ''visible'' and the ''invisible'', the music is proof that there is something beyond what the senses tell us. The waves that pass through air are just the physical part of the music. For each person has an effect, a different meaning, is infinite as the soul. In some ways it is as a supplement to the soul, mind, and environment. And the soul, mind and environment are complements of music. It is a symbiotic relationship. The music is in everything, and everything can be in music. Even things that do not have sound, have music. Part of music is sound, but also as important is within us.
In itself, has the two qualities of art: the creation and representation. Just as a song can be created to represent the sound the leaves falling from the trees in winter, it also can be created to create new places, nonexistent.
Music is also a carrier, is like creating feelings extensions of the musical sender and conveys these extensions to the receiver, making the latter, if he has prepared the soul, understand what the other person feels, and maybe even it generate the same feeling (as many women have been enamored by a man touching a love song of the beatles). But not only conveys emotions, ideas, etc.. , Also carries the soul or mind of the person, and until the body sometimes, to new places, that are created in the deep of dimensions of music. An example, last year I remember me playing ''Greensleeves'' (an inglish classical melody) and suddenly I feel in medieval Europe. The music can carry, or rather keep, memories, sensations throught time, if for example ''Paradise City'' of guns and roses were an infinite wardrobe, in which each person left in 1987 pictures of the things he was iving, and each one has it is a dresser drawer with his key. Paradise city when they hear today, Instit took the key and open the drawer, and have recurring feelings of what they experienced, as memories.
The music is very intricate, being part of it in our souls and / or (using the''or''not to disturb people who do not believe in the soul) minds, depends on each one of us, and its effects are constatly changing. This referred to the ''butterfly effect'', today make and effect and tomorrow will make another. That makes it very infinite. Not the same cause listen ''Immigrant Song'' of led zeppelin at four in the morning at 6 o'clock. Not cause the same in a high-class South African, who in a Czechoslovak working class. The music defines its context and its context defines the music.
The music has all the characteristics of other types of art, that makes her beautiful. It has a little acting, a bit of representation through images, which isn't instrumental had poetry, and also creates a dance by itself.
And besides, the music rules the world, everything has a rhythm, a progression, which can be either musical. But this talk of music as governing body given the title of the film.
Being a very personal interpretation, (It isn't what I think music is, it is why I think music is for me), the music is the essence of life made art. When the music come to me, is when my soul manifest. Listen to music is a very beautiful thing, and somethimes also is a spiritual thing. I think that god give me a big present leaving me to do music, he gave me the oportunity of be a creator. Know that it's a very prescious thing, like an argentinan song say, ''my little soul dances with a lot joy''.
I post in two coments because the computer doesn't let me upload it in one

My recent post Most / Bridge
For me...
What Music is... Is too complex to be descripted in a few words... But if I have to explain what it is for me, Music is the result of all the frequencies that are floating around this beautiful universe, that are aglomerated in a comprehensive sound for humans, that means that everything is music, but not every human distinguish all the sounds as music, because they're acculturated to the patterns imposed by the old harmony, music is when you hear in the early morning the birds, music is a tree leaf falling into the floor, music is the deepest silence of the deepest hole, music is the sound of the air that we breath...
Music is Life coming, and music is life passing away in front of your eyes, when you're a child everything is so intense and when you grows up everything that used to be intense is now common, that's the music of life...
If you really want to know what music is, first you gotta be prisoner of time and realize who you really was, and then you would be free and able to recognize what music really is...
I Salute you, and have a beautiful day full of love.^_^
I believe that music (as all art) is a kind of communication with the inside of us, our sensations are processed, in any form and manner in abstract expressions
Music is a way to express emotions and feelings that would be impossible to convey in any other way. It is something that links everyone together, as it is universal. Beats, melodies, harmonies, etc. do not require translation and would be impossible to, as every note means something different to every person. What makes music so great is that each person’s reaction to it is unique and completely natural. Personally I think music the thing that your soul can connect to on the deepest level, because it’s like a person in that your relationship with it will always be evolving and you will constantly be discovering different aspects of it but unlike a person music will always be there. Part of the greatness of music is that you have no control over what type of music or what musician appeals to you the most, but when you hear the type of music you have the most love for it’s like nothing you could ever even try to explain. You just suddenly know that you are not alone in this world, that true beauty exists, and that you are the person that you are for a reason. To me it is mind blowing and utterly fantastic that a collection of sounds and the endless ways different people choice to arrange particular sounds are able to have that profound and incomparable of an effect on me. But lastly it is something that is impossible to define because music it’s self is completely subjective and I think that is the way it is meant to be.
Music is everything__Music is Life__Music is death__Music has no start and never ends__Music is infinite__it can be simple or complex__it is a way of living...you become a part of it__
It is the essence of life, it completes and fills the heart. it is commentary on government, man, nature, relationships, emotions, space, dimensions and home. sometimes it doesn't have words but it speaks (and sounds) louder that what we can express or say. it is the universal language of the universe. it lives inside of us (sometimes we just don't know where to find it). it decorates life with imaginations and emotions. it varies from person to person. it is power. it is free.
it's name is music.
"Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid."
Frank Zappa
music is balance.
music can make you happy when youre sad or turn you sad when you thought you were happy.
music lifts all of us up to a energy that we wouldnt be able to reach otherwise.
in my life music is the first thing i turn to when i feel lonely or helpless or insignificant.
when someone doesnt have anyone else its a beautiful thing to be able to go to a musician you love.
music has changed who i have grown to be and inspired a lifestyle i hope to never change.
music is positive, and everyone should have some of that positivity
a world without music would be a canvas without red paint.
Music is the answer to all of life's questions
Well I was never fond of theoretical essays, since an idea is an idea, you can never describe it as you wish, but I will give it a shot. So, what's the definition of music? I don't care actually, you may call it whatever you want. It is so boring and cliche, but to me music is life, my life, although some people would doubt it. I took piano lessons and I was really good at it , but I had to stop cause my teacher moved out of town, and I wasn't lucky enough to find another as good as her. That and because I couldn't play the songs I wanted on the piano! I felt a big disappointment which I will never be over completely. but I'm a heavy listener, I'm a severe case of musicoholic (pepper-oholic as well, but that's not the point). For some people this isn't enough. They don't believe that one can love music without being a virtuoso.I feel deeply offended by this train of thought. Anyway, I have reached this point where I'm not sure whether I choose a song, or my life chooses one for me. I just can't get through the day without music. Music is my power. I never feel lonely, even if it's a song about abondonment, or loneliness or pain, there is someone singing that song, someone who wrote the lyrics to it, someone who has had a similar experience in the past and was strong enough to draw inspiration from that and express themselves. That's hope. If they can be over it, I may soMusic is power. It has the magical power to help you through the roughest day. And most of all music is one's past. All of my memories are entwined with songs and melodies.meday be as well. Music is hope. The only thing I hate about music is the silence it leaves behind, when you have to stop listening...
I've been reading a book called 'This is your brain on music' which looks at the psycological and technical aspects of how humans hear and react to music, how it can bring memories and emotions flowing into our minds, and how our ears process the waves of air pressures to intrepret it as sound.
After reading all this, I still don't have a better answer than this:
Music is love.
Man is being able to experience the world and its existence with sense organs. Music is a dimension that can be experienced by ones ears and is being converted by the brain. But music is not just a collection of sounds that are accidentally added together. Music is a dimension that only can be understood by a creatures brain. As a brain is able to convert and understand sounds as music, music can only exist when there is at least one brain that is assembling sounds together to what it is.
music saved my life..had a lot of really bad things happen to me and music got me through. sounds cliche but its true..john frusciante's struggle in particular i can relate to..we've both been through hell in life but got through it. well written songs and his struggle and success made me stronger..knowing no matter how bad things get..you'll always pull through.
Music is made up of sound waves that can be described as pressure flucations as I learned in Physics. I think you just get a series of them and if they sound pleasing that is music. What these waves do in our brains I don't know... but it is fucking amazing. There is a science behind it.... i'm sure.... maybe another day I can tell you more....
Wonderful stuff.. really full of usefull information. I'll grab the RSS feed and will stay tuned for more. Oh, and I threw you a StumbleUpon vote
