The other day, on the eve of the release of the comeback album I'm With You which was performed in its entiety and aired live in cinemas across the world and on a , the Red Hot Chili Peppers sat down with Fuse for a quick sneak-preview series of interviews. In the second video clip, Anthony Kiedis and Flea touch the subject of John and his departure from the band and give him a little more praise.

Anthony Kiedis: We’re a band made up of four people; we all contribute a lot, so when John left, I didn’t feel like it was that kind of—it was a heavy change, but it didn’t seem like a devastating change, it just seemed like a heavy change.

Interviewer: So, unlike them, it never occurred to you that it might be it?

Anthony Kiedis: Well, it occurred to me that they might not want to carry on, but I felt like it was an opportunity being created for everybody: an opportunity for John to go do what he wanted to do and an opportunity for us to do something different and fresh, and with somebody that we could be a little more functional in this era with.

Flea: On that, just to—we’d really like to express my, and, I guess, our, gratitude for John. He gave us so much—he gave us infinite and enormous creative contributions as a songwriter, as a musician, to everything that we were over the last fifteen years with him and really, he’s just the greatest, and so grateful for us and we’re so lucky to have had the opportunity to be with him together doing what we did.

19 Reactions to Anthony Kiedis and Flea praise John in pre-release Fuse interview

  1. JrT says:

Haha could Anthony possibly have given a more typical Anthony Kiedis response in that question about Raindance Maggie?

  2. Johnydrama says:

Thank god John left! The new record is bullshit, RHCP started the downhill like all big rock bands do and I'm glad John is not included

  3. TheKingOfRock says:

Well, I watched the show last night at the theater and I have to say that Josh killed it and is more than a worthy member of this long great band. I honestly wouldn't mind if they played all new stuff and the earliest "Pre-John" tunes as well. I love John and I love the time he sent in the band, but they seemed re-energized and the were really laying into the new tunes as they should. No need to be a tribute band to their past and they may as well keep moving forward and creating new stuff and giving the occasional nod to the old albums. Just please don't do a By The Way/Stadium heavy setlist this tour. New stuff and then change up the set to include all of the most rippin' of the old. Their greatest album with John was BSSM and that was 20 years ago, get over it! It has all been diminishing returns since then. John opted out, so thank you and goodbye!!

  5. Iva says:

Can any of you please explain me why Johnydrama's opinion is not allowed?

There are and there should be both:
    a) People who are sad that John left RHCP;
    b) People who are happy for him because he left.

Such opinions are as normal as:
    a) RHCP are everything, regardless who's in the band;
    b) John betrayed the band"

....let's just realise that we are not obliged to think the same. :)

    • Sue says:

And between the extremities of the a)'s and the b)'s listed above [especially the 2nd lot], lie most people's opinion.

Change is normal and inevitable and I think most people understand that all parties were ready for one: )

  6. random dude says:

who says his opinion isnt allowed? the low raiting just shows that a lot people arent happy that he calls the new record "bullshit" and that he predicts the "downhill" of the peppers. someone who says john betrayed the band would get a low rating too. johnydrama isnt happy for john because john can do what he wants now, hes just happy that john isnt in the peppers anymore because they are popular and obviously he doesnt like these "big rock bands".

  7. random dude says:

oh and when you say you are happy for john that he can do whatever _he_ wants why arent you happy for anthony, flea, chad and josh that they can do whatever _they_ want?

    • Iva says:

Why should I (if you mean me, specifically) care about their happiness? I was just moderating comments and they don't interest me in any way. You're reading into this way too much.

      • random dude says:

ok maybe i overreacted because you defended johnydrama although nobody attacked him directly.
and the second part was meant more general. of course _someone _ cant be interested in the peppers but this is no reason to hate on them and say rude things. but this happens here.
it just matters how you say something. you, Iva, say you dont care for the peppers and thats ok with me, but you say it a way that noone who likes them can be offended.

    • brummieapril says:

I thought this was a John Frusciante fansite, not a RHCP fansite? Aren't you allowed to say anything negative about this band or not be interested in the other band members?

      • random dude says:

well i think someone who is happy for john can be happy for them even if one doesnt care for them, just because its a nice gesture. you may not care for the peppers but please do it in a nice way because a lot people, also in this forum, do care for them.
if you say you dont like something, then its an opinion. but if you say its bullshit, youre going too far.

        • brummieapril says:

Why the thumbs down? I was merely stating a fact and asking an open question not looking to offend.

I agree with you that people could say things in a less offensive and inflamatory way but that's the nature of forums unfortunately. People have opinions and some state them more strongly than others. I've seen a lot worse said about John on his own fansite! Also, some people are more sensitive to criticism of their favourite band/artist than others, no?
For me personally, it's neither about hating the band. I just don't feel strongly enough about them to feel any extreme emotions. Just indifferent I guess. But at the same time, I met some wonderful people because of the RHCP and so I'm very happy for them that things are going well for the band.

          • random dude says:

yeah you may be right. i just hoped the conversations here would be a little bit nicer than in other forums. i liked the thought that johns fans are a bit more civilized than the average mesage board writer, but it seems im wrong...

            • Anon - OOOHHHHH says:

You must be a new fan or something - there's been negativity in John sites for much much longer than this site has existed. Yell'O in Z'bras anyone??! How about Been Insane?! Yeah most of you are too young to know about those sites.

            • Iva says:

What I was trying to say all along and you keep on missunderstanding it:

Don't take people's opinion that seriously, it's not about you or someone close to you.

This is not a forum, this is a forum: http://yourforumisgluedtoasiteonfire.net and you're more than welcome to join our conversations, do come in. :)

And a lot of JF fans tend to be a bit "out there", but they mostly, mostly have the critical view of things and, often, knowledge of music and other arts. They're guided by that, not by any laws of belonging or any codex of a group of people. That's how I see it, at least.

  8. Rogier says:

See here, the difference between hypocrisy and honesty. Just acknowledge the man is a genius and you miss him. Not too hard to say, if your ego is not in the way.

Flea is the man. So is Chad.

Chad Smith: Let me just say that we love John Frusciante and we’re so grateful to what he has given us in this band. He’s written some of the best parts of our biggest songs and he’s just a great, great musician. Probably one of the best musicians I’ve ever played with. We’re all very grateful for what he gave to the band.

  9. mspretty says:

John is a genius and I certainly miss him in the band!
