Something solo:
Here are two clips from a VCD-turned-DVD of John’s solo performance at famous Roxy in Los Angeles on 19th March 2001 are online. Friends from Stonecoldbush.com originally put the DVD together. The songs I picked for this week are Saturation and Beat Down. John’s introduction to the second one is beautiful. He’s dedicating it to two people, one of whom obviously exists and is a close friend and collegue of his, and one of whom maybe does not even exist. Very different, very emotional and somewhat idealistic.
Something raw and powerful
In June 2002, Red Hot Chili Peppers played promotional shows for By The Way all around Europe and a couple of them, including the one in Madrid, were recorded by TV. The highlight of that show is an explosive performance of Don’t Forget Me, with closeups on John’s guitar…and he’s even doing a backflip at the beginning of the first chorus. A must-see!
Something chatty:
Independent production house Pro.ba has done interviews with many people acknowledged worldwide and many of those were featured in a show called Kuhinja (Kitchen). In 2001, they have also done an interview with John. Sitting on the edge of the bed in his back-then-home in Chateau Marmount, he’s talking about the creation of his music, the situation he’s writing his songs in and his influences in the time of recording To Record Only Water For Ten Days. A beautiful video interview indeed.
Some intro appreciation
We all love intros and, as we’re waiting for a professionally filmed Hullabaloo-style one from Green Fest, here are two which might not be as intense, but they come pretty close: 26th October 2006, Atlanta; as recorded by Dylid and 01st July 2007, Hamburg, as recorded by Paul. Pick the one you like more, it can serve you better than any wake up alarm!
Something romantic
This one was promised last month and here it is: a first-row almost unhshaky video of John covering Simon and Garfunkel’s For Emily (Wherever I May Find Her) on 13th April 2007 in Brisbane. As all the previous times the song was covered, the voice is romantic, passionate and intense; almost as if it was meant to make your hands sweat and your heart stop. That is also the very last time John sung this song, as of now. Many thanks to James Schultz aka SchultZie for having filmed it, almost flawlessly.
Something to just listen to:
This week there’s only one audio file: John’s cover of Steve Goodman’s The City Of New Orleans (more info on the song here) performed at the Voodoo Fest, his tribute to the city which suffered a lot in the year before that. He knows what to sign at what occasion, so he’s greeted with screaming, but then he makes a mistake and has to start over.
Something promotional:
Invisible Movement is, once again, very proud to announce that The String Quartet put out their new CD: Strung Out volume 3 – The String Quartet Tribute To Alternative Rock Hits. They have covered three RHCP songs in a very unique fashion on this CD and the one we’re listening to this week is Tell me Baby. If you like it, the CD is available on iTunes and it is also available for purchase on the Vitamin Records website. I enjoyed listening to the same notes played on different instruments and strings & winter are the greatest combination ever so…give it a try, you won’t regret it. If you’re not enjoying classical music, this might change your views.
Something by the visitors:
The first person who was brave enough to have some of his music featured on a weekly playlist here and exposed to the views of thousands is Hrvoje Baudoin from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia…the same person who came back from Milano last and Udine this year with some nice photos and video clips. He’s a guitar player and he also likes to duplicate himself in his video clips, so…in the cover of John’s Time Is Nothing, there will be two guys playing, while in reality there was just one. If you want to see more of Hrvoje’s music and skating clips, check out his YouTube page.
Visitors of Invisible Movement are being asked for their input. What would you like to see/hear for a week? There are only two rules 1) I got to have it (duh) and 2) No officially released material, no TROWFTD videos and nothing that’s unsuitable for viewers under 16 years of age.
Either way, send your ideas in before the weekend and I’ll see what I can do about it.
Also, if you have covered any of John’s songs or covered a song he’s previously covered and you’re brave enough to put it onto public display for a week, send it over; I’ll gladly feature it here!
