Let The Good Times Roll!
In case you have not purchased it yet, George Clinton’s newest album, George Clinton And His Gangsters Of Love is now available on the most of the bigger online stores. It can be bought in the traditional manner or you can simply get the individual track RHCP are featured on.
In case you would like to listen to the whole song, someone apparently YoTube’d it and there are some samples at this link as well. If nothing else, you’ll be delighted by John’s bluesy playing. That man never fails to deliver something new, isn’t it so?
And here are a couple of song reviews. In fact, a positive and a negative one.
Clinton fares better with “Let the Good Times Roll†by Shirley & Lee, but not by much. Featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the song is a fun, bouncy take on the original ’50s R&B track. Actually, it’s rather odd to call this a George Clinton cover, as he barely makes an appearance anywhere on it. Anthony Kiedis pulls lead vocal duties while Clinton phones in a background vocal of some sort. If Clinton was trying a duet, he failed miserably. Also of note is John Frusciante’s guitar, which dominates the song throughout, including an unfortunately misplaced melody solo that only succeeds in puzzling the listener.

Clinton’s doo-wop roots come through most in “Let The Good Times Roll.†However, the Chili Peppers lend a whiny quality to the song — their guitars are a little too strong, and they obfuscate the rhythm, creating another chaos of fragmentation which does not, this time, pay off.
