Parallel Universe in Guitar Techniques May 2014 + Total Guitar April 2014 snippet

We’ve been doing some more press clipping for you and what we dug out are two more bits on John – one feature and one err…not sure how to call this. So, have a look and enjoy.

Guitar Techniques, May 2014 – Parallel Universe

Guitar Techniques have made a good, good decision to tab the genius song that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Parallel Universe and this is to be found in their May 2014 issue.

Parallel Universe first appeared as a promotional single on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album Californication (1999) and has since become one of the band’s most enduring live tracks. It’s something of a departure from their trademark funk-laden grooves and instead features a repetitive ostinato pattern played by harmonised bass and guitar.

The magazine itself comes with a CD and John is on its cover. There are three tracks related to the feature on Parallel Universe (guitar & full backing); so you might want to buy yourself a copy.

Total Guitar, April 2014 – a (strange) snippet

As you might or might not know by now, Total Guitar have jumped onto the listicle bandwagon, thus adding a listicle to the very last page of each of their newer issues. This monthly. listicle is appropriately called The Final Countdown.

The April 2014 TFC is called 10 Bad solo albums by great guitarists and here is their list.

  1. Chris Cornell – Scream (2009)
  2. John Frusciante – Niandra LaDes and Usually Just A T-Shirt (1994)
  3. Dave Navarro – Trust No One (2001)
  4. George Harrison – Gone Troppo (1982)
  5. The Nightwatchman – One Man Revolution (2007)
  6. Bernard Butler – Friends & Lovers (1999)
  7. Johnny Marr & The Healers – Boomslang (2003)
  8. Ronnie Wood – 1234 (1981)
  9. Steve Jones – Mercy (1987)
  10. John Squire – Marshall’s House (2004)

Wait a minute, Niandra LaDes is “bad”? Here’s what they had to say about it.

These scratchy, tone-deaf doodles were unrecognisable from the guitar mastery of the Chili Peppers’ BloodSugarSexMagik. Frusciante himself hoiked the album off the shelves in 1998: never a good sign.

Ummm, editors, that’s Smile From The Streets You Hold you’re talking about.

If you’re into having this for novelty purposes or whatever, the April issue of TG is still available and you can buy yourself a copy.
