Moby @ Blockbuster Pavilion, San Bernardino

This is the liner note on track 06, New Dawn Fades, by Anthony Wilson, as it appeared in the album’s booklet, written in March 2002.

And arguably the movie of ’95 was “Heat”: the De Niro-Pacino vehnicle. My partner, Yvette, and I were watching said movie in the Universal Multiplex on top of Barham Blvd in Los Angeles one wonderful warm LA evening. Modway through the movie, vehnicles start moving and a great boom hearalded one of the most powerful pieces of soundtrack imaginable. Thrilled from the start, 30 seconds in, I go nuts; “fuck me, it’s one of ours, it’s one of ours.” Took me a little while longer to figure it was “New Dawn Dades” in a stunning reworking by my favourite Christian, Moby. Just an amazing moment in my life. Thanks, M. At the Moby LA gig in the summer of 2001, Moby, John Frusciante of the Chili bunch and Billy the bald one from the Pumpkins suggested that they join the support act in a rendition of said Joy Division classic. Since the support band were Joy Division/New Order it’s rewarding to know their initial reply was “how does it go?” Moby then mixed this live performance especially for “24 Hour Party People”. Here it is. Again, thanks to M. And if you ever get to read the book of the movie, published by Macmilan books, price 9.95 in the UK, you’ll know that NDF contains the unnerving suggestion that the lead singer of said group takes the blame.

And this is what Peter Hook said in an interview in late 2011:

Moby is a devoted fan who once recorded “New Dawn Fades.” How did he end up on the L.A. bills?
He emailed me to ask if he could get on the guest list. I shamed him into singing for his supper, shall we say. I’ve played with Moby a few times over the years….including when New Order did his Area: One festival tour in 2001. I caught the final show at Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion, near San Bernardino.
Yes, I remember we did “New Dawn Fades” with him there one night with [ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist] John Frusciante [who covered it on his own solo album]. It was fantastic and the first time we played that in New Order for 18 years. John had to teach Bernard and I the song in the dressing room! How bizarre is that?
