The book is called Musicians As Artists, it was published in 1994 and is now out of print. Its author is Jim McMullan and it was co-authored by Dick Gauitier. It lists over 30 musicians who have a way with brushes, paint, pencils et al. Have you ever seen John Lennon’s drawings? Did you know Robby Krieger had some awesome paintings? How about the other creative side of Miles Davis? No? Well, finding about it will certainly broaden the horizons of your knowledge of art. Some of those people have truly awesome work.
As for John, he’s represented with three paintings, one of which he did together with Flea’s daughter, Clara Balzary. None of those paintings are usually found in other retrospectives.
Here’s one of John’s two quotes from this book:
I agree and disagree, in the sense that I am nothing, and anything that amounts to zero is beautiful and overwhelming to me. Art doesn’t exist, but neither does the moment that this sentence began. Come back with me now. I believe 1,000,000 = zero as obviously as does 1 0 0 0 0 0 0.
You can have a look at the rest of the John feature, if you like. There’s also the book cover. As for ordering, I got my copy through abebooks.com, but there are also copies available on Amazon. Jim McMullan also wrote another book with a similar theme: Actors As Artists.
Jim McMullan’s Musicians As Artists, co-authored by by Dick Gauitier is an interesting collection of works by hidden visual art talents coming from less and more prominent names in music. It lists over 30 musicians who have a way with brushes, paint, pencils et al. Have you ever seen John Lennon’s drawings? Did you know Robby Kirieger did some awesome paintings? How about the other creative side of Miles Davis?
In this book, John lists Marcel Duchamp, Leonardo da Vinci, Jean Michel Basquiat and Clara Balzary as his favourite artists.
The three presented works of art are all labelled Untitled, the last of them was a joint effort between John and Clara.
1 Untitled, oil stick and acrylic
2.Untitled, watercolor and pastel
3 Untitled, acrylic, oil stick and pencil
I agree and disagree, in the sense that I am nothing, and anything that amounts to zero is beautiful and overwhelming to me. Art doesn’t exist, but neither does the moment that this sentence began. Come back with me now. I believe 1,000,000 = zero as obviously as does 1 0 0 0 0 0 0.
Words are an infinite vagina that flips inside (out) itself (its surroundings) into the 4th dimension. Art is my or your surroundings, and is, therefore, just a question of being everywhere and nowhere or being a bum on why.
There are also two quotes on art picked as his favourites:
Art = Art as shit = SHITTE
– Duchamp
The only thing we have to do with art is it’s the last three letters in FART.
– Gibby Haynes of Classical Butthole Surfers
