Gift
I saw a rough cut of Gift in the early days, like a few scenes from this work in progress. I told Perry I had some music that’s the same vibe as his movie and he said you should bring it over to the studio. We listened and it went perfectly with this other scene I hadn’t seen yet that had no music – the scene with the crawling ants. It was I’d already written it and it just fit perfect. Somehow we were on the same wavelength again. There was another part where I play a typical rock’n’roll kind of bend and that’s right where you see the poster that says, rock’n’roll will kill you.

John himself is not in the film.

Gift

Around mid-2010, Perry Farrell promised a DVD of Gift through a Twitter update. As of January 2015, it has yet to be been released.

Gift is a 1993 film made by Perry Farrell and Casey Niccoli that features Farrell’s band Jane’s Addiction. Gift was released by Warner Brothers.
The following Jane’s Addiction songs are featured in the soundtrack:
“Stop”
“Classic Girl”
“Ain’t No Right”
“Of Course”
“Three Days”
In addition, John Frusciante (who would soon be replaced in the Red Hot Chili Peppers by Jane’s Addiction member Dave Navarro) recorded the song “Ants” which features in this film. This was later released on initial cassette versions of his album Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt in 1994, and accordingly credits the song to being from this film.
Farrell and rapper Ice-T also do a version of Sly and the Family Stone’s Don’t Call Me Nigger Whitey in the film as well.
All of the filming for the movie took place around the time of the recording sessions for Ritual de lo Habitual in 1990.
