• Swahili Blonde (Nicole Turley and John Frusciante) to release a digital single later this month!

Sick of Saturday questions? Not into Chad Smith’s quotes on RHCP? Seen all the media that’s posted every now and then? Today’s your lucky day, I guess, as there’s some REAL news and some MUSIC! ^_^ I’ve been nudged to post some more news on this ever since some people first spotted it; but – just as it was the case with Speed Dealer Moms – I thought it would not be all right to disturb the musicians at work until they’re ready to present something to us. Swahili Blonde is a new project of the percussionist/vocalist Nicole Turley who formerly played with Los Angeles-based new age band Weave! (you…

  • Saturday question #39: YOUR top 5 replacement band members

This Saturday question was, obviously, inspired by the internet find from the other day; where the article’s author listed his top 5 replacement band members – replacement, as in “they were not in the band’s initial line-up and then they came around and made the band better/managed to fit in”. Obviously, John’s a replacement band member himself; but there are many others, so it’s an interesting thing to discuss…and finally, a new Saturday question for those who like to discuss music only. So, spil it out, give us all YOUR top 5 replacement band members! For those who don’t know: Saturday questions are a weekly meme on Invisible Movement where…

  • N.A.S.A. remix contest & collection of Way Down remixes

A fan of remixes? Did you like N.A.S.A.’s album? This one’s for you, then! As reported by Paste magazine (who should’ve reported it a bit earlier, really), Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon offered a spot on the new remix album and 1000$ for the best remix of one of the songs off Spirit Of Apollo. In addition to that, everyone who tweets about this might win something, too. The submissions are closed, but you can still have some fun of your own if you like things like this. Go to the competition page on Indaba Music and listen to the separate files of each song’s parts. For example, for…

  • Top five replacement band members list – guess who’s number two!

This is just plain interesting. No big news or anything, just thought it could be a cool read and a great concept. Sean Levinston of Desert Island Lists has compiled a top five of Replacement Band Members. From Ronnie Wood to Brian Johnson via RJ Dio and Phil Collen…here’s the number two on the list: 2. John Frusciante-If it wasn’t hard enough to categorize the Red Hot Chili Peppers, here comes John Frusciante to just make it more of a confusing process that is still debated today. I don’t know how they did it, but somehow the Chili Peppers found a guy that gave them everything they could ever want…

  • Song of the decade poll by AbsoluteRadio

This decide, apparently called “noughties” by some people, is nearing its end. Therefore, many polls on what were our favourite films, people, books, musicians et cetera are taking place. If you were old enough to remember it from any previous decade, you might even find it a bit annoying. Nevertheless, there is also a poll for song of the decade. And there’s a certain song with a memorable riff that graced all possible TV shows (everything from MTV’s TRL to very random commercials in countries in transition), performed by a person whom you just can’t forget even if you wanted to for a band that’s been everywhere. In other words,…

  • October 2009 round-up

October 2009 is behind us and it was the month when, according to the “original” plan and many insiders’ comments on services such as Myspace and Twitter, Red Hot Chili Peppers returned to the studio. Most of the news items from this month revolved around this matter as well and there have been good vibes, but also a lot of anxiety coming from fans’ side was unleashed. Nobody is to blame, really; we’re all tottering in the dark, either way. But since being anxious can’t help things pass faster, here’s an advice: enjoy the music, enjoy rewinding your memories and who knows, what’s waiting around the corner is probably as…

  • Saturday question #38: Overcoming fear

This week’s question could be missleading, so just a little note beforehand: today’s date is a pure coincidence, it has nothing to do with this question. It’s about fear. Everyone’s afraid of something, some of us less, some of us more. What do you do to overcome fear? How do you deal with fear? How do you make the fear go away? For those who don’t know: Saturday questions are a weekly meme on Invisible Movement where the site visitors get their own say. The questions are of a broad range, some of them are directly connected to the site subject and music, some are wonderfully irrelevant and some are…

  • “How to play guitar like JF” feature from MusicRadar

Two days ago, MusicRadar, the kind people who brought us the now-legendary podcast interview with John in January and got him to answer questions from one scarecrow and five humans, have published a helpful article for musicians titled “How to play guitar like John Frusciante”. Richard Barrett, a Total Guitar contributor, provided a 2-minute instructional video to go alongside the whole article and four tab examples: simple rhythm guitar, rhythm guitar with embellishments, simple lead guitar and distortion solo. As usual, there was a lot of praise for John’s work included, so…what are you waiting for? Go and have a look now!

  • Possible RHCP album release in October 2010?

According to an interview Chad Smith gave to Clash Music, Red Hot Chili Peppers might release a new album in October 2010. Interviewed for the next issue of Clash Magazine, Smith shared details of their plans stating, “We’re gonna write for a while, it usually takes us a while” before speculating that the release date would be “Some time next year, maybe this time [next year]”. Asked if Flea’s experience working with Thom Yorke might feed back into the Chili Peppers new material, Smith said that his colleague had given him a cd of electronic beats to inspire him but that, at the moment, there wasn’t an explicit electronic direction…

  • Rob Alvord explains why he loves John so much

In a brief interview with In Utah This Week, singer-songwriter Rob Alvord was asked about his appreciation for John. Why are you so intrigued by guitarist John Frusciante? It is such a Cinderella Story. The man literally came back from the dead and resurrected a band’s stardom, to which he had originally helped become a phenomenon when he was only 19 years old. Truly, only a man who had been to hell and back has the understanding and ability to channel raw human emotion into sound waves the way that John Frusciante does. In addition to this, Rob has a whole writeup on John on his Myspace blog. His music…
