Interviewer: Das ist er: Der Song, der sich nennt “Song To Sing When I’m Lonely” von John Frusciante. Schönen guten Tag! Ihr hört eure Nachmittagschilloutsendung Fritzbe [I didn’t get the name of the show] hier auf Fritz. That’s you…

John Frusciante: Hi!

Interviewer: ..and you’re obviously tired!

John Frusciante: No.

Interviewer: Er ist müde. Er hat nämlich gerade gegähnt. Welcome to the show, John!

John Frusciante: Hi! Thank you!

Interviewer: Are you okay?

John Frusciante: Mhm..

Interviewer: You are? That’s good! Jetzt interessiert mich natürlich: Wie lässt sich so was verbinden? [translating the things she’s just said:] Most of our listeners, they only know you as the guitar player of Red Hot Chili Peppers, but, you know, that’s not the only thing you do. You’re actually releasing your fourth solo album next Monday; it’s coming out here in Germany. It’s called “Shadows Collide With People” and it’s very very different from the stuff you’re usually used to from, like, the Peppers. What I wanna know is: How does that go together, like, you know, this very very different music with the Peppers and your own style?

John Frusciante: When I first started doing other music, outside of the Chili Peppers, the music that’s on my first solo record, that music was all made at the same time as the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album and at that time I was just doing everything I could to do music as different from the Chili Peppers as possible, you know, I listened to a lot of music that, I wasn’t able to, really had those more experimental, atonal sort of influences. I wasn’t able to do them as much with the Chili Peppers. So I was making music at home that I could really get as weird as I wanted to with and I didn’t have to follow the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge structure and I just wanted to make very strange music but as I’ve grown as a songwriter and stuff I would say the music’s probably ends up having more to do with what I do in the band than it used to just because, you know, like, my song writing definitely at the time that I made this record “Shadows Collide With People”, my song writing, I was just very interested in pop music of all different kinds, so I was writing sort of poppy songs, as well as there’s also avant-garde experimental sort of things that again I wouldn’t be able to do in the Chili Peppers but that I can do on my solo records.

[again translating her own question:] What I wanna know: Does it bring any advantages to be a part of the Peppers, is it, like, easier to create an audience for your music or are the expectations too big, too high because everybody thinks you’re, like, this great great guitar player of this great great rock and roll band and is it, like, you know,..

John Frusciante: That’s not a hard thing to live up to because I am a good guitar player, so it’s not like…, but, you know, there’s not really any expectations or anything it’s more – what you said at the beginning – it does make more people notice if I do something than if I wasn’t in the band and for me just being creative and being in the Red Hot Chili Peppers in my life has just gone hand in hand through my whole life since I was 18 years old. The periods in my life where I was creative were at the same time that I was in the Chili Peppers, so, you know… I hadn’t written any songs really in my five years and I joined the Chili Peppers again and I started writing songs again and, you know, it’s grown to where I was at, at the point with “Shadows Collide With People” and it’s even growing a lot since then. So being in the Red Hot Chili Peppers definitely gives me a lot of musical freedom. I can do whatever I want and I can make as much music as I want and I even have a lot of time to do it and I know it seems like the Chili Peppers are busy but we still have, you know, we do a tour and we have, like, a two week break in the middle of the tour and I can make a whole record in that time, you know, so it’s not,….you know, I just have a lot of freedom, you know.

Interviewer: Alright. [end of translation] Wir hören uns jetzt einen Chili Peppers Song an. Hier ist „By The Way“! You like that song „By The Way“?

John Frusciante: Sure.

Interviewer: Yeah?! We’re gonna listen to it now.

[“By The Way” is being played]
