Fritz Radio interview transcript, 2004
Interviewer: Komplett ungewöhnliche Musik hier auf Fritz von The Velvet Underground. Dieser Song heißt „Lisa Says“ und ausgesucht hat sich diesen Song, weil er einer seiner Lieblingssongs ist, John Frusciante, der hier seit doch einer guten halben Stunde zu Gast ist. You really like that song ever since you were little, you said, right?!
John Frusciante: No, since I was 17.
Interviewer: 17, okay.
John Frusciante: I’ve been listening to them since I was 14 but I didn’t have that till I was 17.
Interviewer: Also seit er 17 ist, mag er diesen Song und doch ist ein schicker Song. The next song we gonna play, you requested that one too. Which one is it?
John Frusciante: This is from Nico. One of the best solo records ever made as a solo artist and this is from the record “Desert Shore†and it’s a song called “Janitor of Lunacyâ€. She wrote her songs herself at this point and she wrote great songs and I think more girls should write great songs like that.
Interviewer: Is it one of your favourite albums, like you said, that Nico album?
John Frusciante: Oh, “Desert Shore†and “The Marble Index†and “The End†and “Chelsea Girlâ€.
Interviewer: Those are your favourite records?
John Frusciante: Those are the best Nico records.
Interviewer: Ah, okay. Also als nächstes hören wir den Song von einer Dame, die zwischenzeitlich auch mal zusammen mit Velvet Underground gesungen hat, nämlich Nico. Von ihrem Album „Desert Shore“, das sehr sehr schick ist und wovon auch John der Meinung ist, dass mehr Mädels solche Musik schreiben sollten, „Janitor of Lunacy“.

You’re just like in a….Ihr hättet in mal sehen sollen, er war so ein bisschen in einer Sphäre. Irgendwo hat er…irgendwo hat er ganz anders gespielt. You were, like, kind of like lost in music when you listen to that song.
John Frusciante: Yeah.
Interviewer: Yeah, it seems like it.
John Frusciante: That’s what it’s for.
Interviewer: Ja, er meinte, dass ist es wofür er gedacht ist. See, our time’s almost up. Leider muss er uns jetzt bald verlassen, aber noch ganz kurz die Frage: Werden wir die Red Hot Chili Peppers oder ihn noch mal irgendwann dieses Jahr live auf Tour sehen, ich meine, die Red Hot Chili Peppers spielen bei Rock am Ring und auch bei Rock im Park, aber vielleicht noch ein paar klitzkleine Konzerte. Are we gonna see either you or the Red Hot Chili Peppers on tour sometime this year or are just gonna play those big festivals?
John Frusciante: I don’t know. I don’t think we’re coming to Germany in June but we are doing a little two-week-tour in June around Europe so we may be playing somewhere close to here and people who really like us can go. Yeah, it’s not up to me if we’re coming to Germany, but just a quick little tour they scheduled, when we don’t really have anything to do.
Interviewer: [translating John: ] Also, es wird eine kleine zwei-Wochen-Tour geben in Europa, ob die Jungs wirklich nach Deutschland kommen, das steht noch nicht fest, aber wenn sie irgendwo in der Nähe sind, dann könnt ihr ja vielleicht hinfahren. Wenn’s nach John ginge, dann würden sie auf jeden Fall nach Deutschland kommen, aber die Jungs hatten da nicht so wirklich viel mitzureden. John…
John Frusciante: But we’ll be working on a new record and we’ll have a new record out, you know, by the end of the year or the beginning of the next year.
Interviewer: It’s like a full studio album or is it going to be a best-of-thing?
John Frusciante: No, studio.
Interviewer: Okay, aber es wird aber noch Ende dieses Jahres ein ganz funkelnagelneues Red Hot Chili Peppers Studioalbum geben. Doch, Ende dieses Jahres dürften sie schon fertig sein. It was such a pleasure to have you here. Thanks for coming.
John Frusciante: It was a pleasure to talk to you.
Interviewer: Also das war’s mit John Frusciante, aber.. you still have one song you requested.
John Frusciante: Yeah, it’s a song by Scritti Politti. I’m not sure what the name is. My friend put it on a mix-CD for me a couple of weeks ago and I don’t have the cover with me but it’s called “Skank – something – Baloneyâ€[btw the songs called “Skank Bloc Bologna†if my research was correct..].
Interviewer: “Skank – something – Baloney�! Yeah, okay. Das ist..

Interviewer: Das ist der Titel des Songs, den wir jetzt gleich hören werden: „Skank – something –Baloney“. Das „something“ steht für den Teil, den er nicht versteht. Er ist von Scritti Politti und wir wissen nicht wie der Song heißt, weil er auf einer Mix-CD ist und einfach nur bekannt ist als Song Nummer 8. That’s your last song.
