Fritz Radio interview transcript, 2004
Interviewer: Die Red Hot Chili Peppers mit “By The Way†und immer noch im Studio der Gitarrist dieser Band John Frusciante. Are you still okay?
John Frusciante: Oh, yeah.
Interviewer: Alright. Die Red Hot Chili Peppers, die gibts ja schon seit über 20 Jahren und den ersten wirklich großen kommerziellen Erfolg hatten sie 1991 mit dem Album, das wir vorhin schon mal erwähnt haben, nämlich „Blood Sugar Sex Magik“ und John Frusciante hat die Band erst drei Jahre vor diesem Album…ist er dazugestoßen und hat sie dann auch schon wieder verlassen. Er ist also kurze Zeit nach dem Release von „Blood Sugar Sex Magik“ und er ist dann erst 1998 wieder zurückgekehrt [I don’t know what’s the sense of this sentence…] und dann haben die Jungs „Californication“ eingespielt und der Rest der ist dann auch Geschichte. Als John das erste Mal die Band verließ, hat er das getan, weil der Erfolg, seiner Meinung nach, zu groß war. Warum ist er gegangen und warum, vor allen Dingen, ist er dann zurückgekommen? Das würde mich mal interessieren. [translating what she has said above:] You left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 91/ 92 maybe?!
John Frusciante: 92
Interviewer: 92, right. That was only your years after you joined them and what makes me wonder…what I’ve heard is that you left because you thought that success was getting to big and that it would change the band. That’s what I’ve read and what makes me wonder is: Why did you join them again? Why did you go back, when success was even bigger?
John Frusciante: Success wasn’t bigger. Nobody gave a damn bout this when I joined the band again. Nobody tried to get us to produce the record. We struggled to get anybody to produce our record. We wanted to find somebody to produce our record, beside Rick, and no producers wanted to produce us because we were thought of being failures at that point but I was happy to become successful when we did because I’d come to terms with it. That wasn’t the reason I quit but it’s true: I was disappointed when we started getting more popular and the reason I quit had to do with the relations in the band weren’t good and inside I needed to figure some things out on my own. I couldn’t be a part of a machine and get to were I wanted to get to as a human being, so that is why I…it’s more important for me to experience what I have to experience as a human being rather than to…rather than to just be in a band because we’re popular, you know, because that’s not a good enough reason that we’re gonna make money or whatever. That’s not a good enough reason to be in a band if I haven’t gotten were I need to be as a person. But when I joined the band again I had learned all the things that I had wanted to learn, I had experienced all the things I wanted to experience and it was time for me to get back into the world again. And so that’s what I did.
Interviewer: [translating John’s words:] Also, als er die Band verließ, hatte das eigentlich weniger mit diesem riesen riesengroßen Erfolg zu tun, als mit den zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen innerhalb der Band. Irgendwie hatte er nicht so richtig das Gefühl, dass…es halt zwischenmenschlich nicht gepasst hat und dann kam dieser riesengroße Erfolg und wichtiger ist es für ihn Erfahrungen…menschliche Erfahrungen zu machen und nicht großer Teil einer riesengroßen Maschinerie zu sein, die richtig viel Kohle macht und als er dann die Chili Peppers…oder als er dann wieder zu den Chili Peppers gestoßen ist, war’s eigentlich so, dass die gerade an ihrem tiefsten Punkt wieder angelangt waren. Keiner dachte, dass sie es wirklich schaffen könnten, eigentlich waren sie schon sozusagen als Loser angesehen gewesen. Keiner wollte das Album produzieren und als er dann wieder zurückgekommen ist, hatte er eigentlich auch schon alles erfahren, was er erfahren wollte, er hatte sich selbst ausprobiert und war einfach bereit dann auch für diesen Erfolg. Would you go back again, if you could, to those days where nobody knew you and where you were only playing in little clubs? [translating her question: ]Also, ob er sich vorstellen könnte wieder zurück da zu sein mit den Peppers, wo sie ganz am Anfang waren, nämlich nur in diesen kleinen Clubs zu spielen.
John Frusciante: No, if I was…if I had the ability to go back into the past, I would do something more interesting than I had.
Interviewer: Really?!
John Frusciante: Well, yeah. I mean, I’m very happy with the way that our career’s going, I mean, you know, there….there’s definitely a big part of me that likes the idea of being smaller like that but I kind of have the opportunity to be both things at once by putting out solo records cause my solo records will never gonna be anything like the size of the Chili Peppers, so, you know, I still get to be small and big at the same time. It’s kind of an interesting experience, you know, I have no interest in trading it for anything else, you know.
Interviewer: [translating John: ] Also, der Witz ist, dass, wenn er könnte, wenn er wirklich zurück in der Zeit springen könnte, dann würde er etwas ganz anderes wahrscheinlich machen, aber im Augenblick ist er ganz zufrieden damit, wie die Sachen halt laufen, denn es ist so, dass er mit den Red Hot Chili Peppers wirklich Arenen und Stadien füllen kann, aber dieses Kleine, dieses Private und Intime auch mit seinen Soloalben eben auslebt, weil die, er ist zumindest der Meinung, natürlich nie so groß werden, wie die Songs der Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also hat er die Möglichkeit beides zu tun und ist damit auch ganz glücklich. [starting something new: ] John Frusciante hat sich auch Songs ausgesucht, seine persönlichen Lieblingssongs und drei davon werden wir auch spielen. [translating it: ] We’re gonna play three of your favourite songs or three songs you picked basically. What’s the first song gonna be?
John Frusciante: The first song is gonna be by The Velvet Underground and it’s called “Lisa Says†and I just love this song so much and I love the way he’s singing in it so much and it’s been one of my favourite songs since I was, like, 17 years old.
Interviewer: [translating John: ] Also er hat sich ausgesucht einen Song von Velvet Underground, nämlich den Song „Lisa Says“. Es gefällt ihm einfach wie auf diesem Song gesungen wird, wie der Song klingt und es ist einfach einer seiner Lieblingssongs schon seit er ein kleines Kind ist….also seit er ein kleiner Junge ist und den hören wir jetzt.
