This is a statement from an interview that Chad Smith has given for British Q Magazine and it can be found in the issue 275.

"Currently on tour with rock supergroup Chickenfoot, Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith spoke exclusively to Q. "No we haven't split up," he insists "We're not playing right now, but shit, man, we played a lot. It was time to take a little break and live your life. We're not some conveyorbelt".

However Smith confirmed that: "Everybody's kind of doing their own thing right now" but Smith claims the band - also including guitarist John Frusciante- are planning to "reconvene at the end of September or October". 'We make music when it feels right you cant force people to do stuff. If you're not feeling it, so why do it? Do other thing and come back to it re-energised"

Many thanks to Ali and Tom for sending me this news.

26 Reactions to Chad Smith on RHCP status, for Q Magazine

  1. frankie says:

i don't know why he keeps giving specific dates for their reunion -- when everybody else's says they're on an indefinite hiatus.
i doubt they'll be back in together in fall. not that i desperately want them to get back together -- i'm just curious.
and this whole thing is starting to feel like a game. probably to keep the fans hoping.

    • guitarman says:

i dont care if chads doin chickenfoot. i would definetly go see them and i support the foot. just as long as rhcp is still his top priority. and i dont really care that their on this hietis.. if john needs time away to do his thing thats ok, but they only have maybe another 10-15 years of good creativity left (natural aging process) thats maybe 3 cds and tours. it would be extremely selfish for john to take more than another 2 or three years off. plus anthony's voice is fading. his song writing is still phenomenal but hes very hit or miss live, another ten years it will be miss more often than hit. john needs to realize how important they're music is to people. i love john and continue to support his solo stuff, but will be very dissapointed if the break is lengthy (5 years or more) or permanent.

  2. Christoph says:

I think people should stay cool!

There is no reason why John could quit the band...
He only says that the massive touring was too much for him,
and i think we all can totally understand this.

But that doesn't mean that the RHCP are dead.
They can do albums, and go on tour for only a few gigs in the world,
    and not over years.

I'm not shure that the text is 100% correct, sorry. :)

  3. Máté says:

I agree with Chad, they shouldn't constrain anything. However, I really hope they are gonna reunite sometime

  4. Arlo says:

Please Chad, STOP DOING THIS. You're annoying.
    Sorry.

  5. André says:

No matter when... i just want them back.. a new album and a world tour!

  6. orange varld says:

    Yeah!

    I like that.
He seems honest, and now I really dare to believe that they're all on good term between them and that is for a good reason if they are on a hiatus.
His arguments are perfect. John also said something similar.
I doubt they reconvene in October but I doubt even much more that they split.

  7. kev says:

Yes yes we all want to see them back but I wouldnt want them back if there not feeling it. They all worked there balls off for us for so long.. they need a fatty break so they can enjoy there lives for a bit. They pretty much dedicated huge chunks of there life for us. Let's hope they all agree to get back and make some funky kick ass music again!!

p.s BSSM was a loooong time ago.. and frusciante is a guitar god

  8. Perrine says:

I can't help laughing when reading this last article on Mr Smith's statement ! (and your crossed out "confusion" is really so ironically appropriate, Iva ! )

Won't we give these poor guys a rest with their life, their music and their band ? Come on !

=> "Don't worry, be happy !" <= Let's simply enjoy what they DO instead of feeding any bitter mood with rumours and our evil imagination  ... (sorry, I felt like putting smileys everywhere just to make sure I found out how to use them  )

  9. Leo says:

i like how every time i see something about chickenfoot its called a "supergroup". lets face it, sammy hagar fucking sucks, satriani is sick at guitar- but who the f cares its all about song writing ability, and chad smith is good but doesnt really bring anything unique to the table- much like the bass player. in the end the music ends up sounding emotionless, washed up and just like bad 80s pop "rock"/ "metal".

as much as i would love to see the peppers touring again i would much rather see john and flea play some shows- whether it be together or not. i would give one of my nuts to see a frusciante/flea/klinghoffer show or some form of it.

plus, the longer we wait for a chili peppers cd the more we will appreciate it when/if it ever comes out.

  10. MA says:

I like what most people have said here. I loved Stadium Arcadium and if they're going to do another album that good, then I'd be glad to hear it. We're not going to get something awesome if their hearts aren't in it. And if they don't want to tour, someone else brought up the Beatles quitting touring in another thread. And they did the freaking White Album after they quit touring. It might be a tough fight with the record company but i bet they could do it.

And several bands have had best selling albums they didn't tour for - R.E.M. didn't tour for Out of Time or Automatic for the People, and those are maybe their best albums, and I'm almost positive their best selling ones.

I've never seen RHCP live, so don't think I'm complaining as one who all ready had their chance. I just think more good stuff will come if they're doing what they want to do.

If RHCP don't feel like making another album then I hope they don't, and as Leo mentioned, as a fan of Flea and John if they had their own projects that could possibly be just as good.

I wouldn't discount Chad, he's an amazing drummer and works so well with so many different groups. But I think he's best with the Peppers and does seem to be the most openly optimistic about them having good work as a band still in front of them. Maybe he's the most anxious to reconvene. Whether that date is true or not, I hope they get together just to say they did it and were in the same place again and had the chance to jam a little. But I think they prolly all have to feel there's no pressure first.

  11. JF38 says:

i think that he's doing this so when they do get back together they sell way more albums.

  12. eugene says:

God i hope the chili peppers break up. or at least get rid of the goofy singer who ruins any chance of the songs being listenable.

    • hope says:

      Hope says:

Could be true. Coincides with the 2 year hiatus suggested by flea and Anthony did say elsewhere that he was writing music over the summer... Who knows if it will actually happen but I love the fact that Chad is one of life's optimists anyway!

    • Christoph says:

I'm wondering why you (Iva) approve such troll provocations... :?:

      • Christoph says:

Oh sorry, i thought that you have to confirm every message, but now I know that it's just the first one :!:

      • Iva says:

I don't agree with him, but it's his opinion. Why wouldn't I let him think whatever he wants to think? I mean, who am I to stop people from thinking what they want?
There are a couple of people who are even vocal about OMGZ BEING ARTIZTIC LOLZ. Believe me.

And I have to approve you only when you're a first-time commenter.

        • Christoph says:

You are absolutely right, but this is only spamming/trolling,
and I think it shouldn't have a place in such conversations.

But at the end it's your choice to delete it or not.

          Greetings from Germany

    • Walter says:

      Hey!

Thinking that chili peppers should break does not mean you don't like them! I agree, Eugene's opinion was expressed a bit coarsely, but still, I have to say that I sometimes (often) get annoyed by Anthony, I liked him much better during the early years. Still, the peppers would not be the peppers without him, but is that a bad thing? It might actually be a good idea breaking up now, or at least disperse any rumors claiming that they will ever regroup- many of the most famous and appreciated bands broke up at their zenith (or just past it, like the previously mentioned example, the Beatles). If they did, I think we'd appreciate the old albums more- as well appreciate a 'reunion' (i hate that term) even more, even tough I would hate never getting to see them live...

I honestly cannot imagine them making another album- at least not within the next 5 or so years- I don't really feel like they have anywhere to go with their current sound - I even found Stadium Arcadium a bit bland at times. Still,John seems to be continually breaking new ground- I hope for his next album to very stripped down, in contrast to the Empyrean- same for the peppers, if they release another album (in contrast to SM)

Still- these are just opinions- and without disagreement and controversies we would still be stuck in the Stone Age

  13. andreas says:

Man i love them soooooo much!!!! They give my live so many, this makes me feel good and very happy. RHCP kicks ass ( hopenly yours eugene).

Greets to all fans of John and RHCP thank you for this wonderfull news!!!!

  14. MikeA says:

They'll do another album when the bank accounts run low. Same with System.

I love them to death but that is just the truth. Plus the record labels like it when older bands
take 4-5 years between albums as it creates interest and maximized profit. Otherwise you get a band like Slayer which is consistent, but only has a loyal small hardcore following.

    • Nicky says:

i disagree, theyve never been a band thats focused on the money they can get.they ended up turning down a $1 million contract with sony because they realised warner were the nicer guys.they arranged their touring schedules so that they have a few days breaknig every so often, even if it costs them money.they'll do it when they want to and when it feels right, same with system

  15. behnood says:

Our man,Mr. Frusciante is the one to blame for dismantling the band...He's is so pigheaded when it comes to teamwork...He has always been the cause of rift in the band, like back in the BSSM era or during the BTW recordings, when in the latter he acted so selfishly in terms of Song writing to the extent that Flea was annoyed with his approach and was on the verge of quitting the band!!!...John may be musically unique and irreplaceable-which indeed he is-, but he is not a dedicated person to a band because of his arrogance and troublesome behavior...He'd better live a solo artist career like Marty Friedman instead of continuously causing problems and controversies in the best band in the world...It seems as if he doesn't realize the precious position that he's been granted in this band,so he'd better leave it for good as he doesn't seem to appreciate this priceless opportunity...I'm so disappointed with him...He used to be my Idol, but now things have changed...I love him musically, and I hate him personally...he's so boastful, arrogant, selfish and maverick!...RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS FOREVER, AND HELL WITH WHOEVER TRIES TO DISBAND THEM!

  16. MA says:

whoah behnood. Why do you lash out like that? Are you living with the pressure of being in that band? Do you know what it feels like? I don't think you have to have experienced it to have a relevant comment but it's like you're not even trying to understand John's position at all. If he was a robot that did what you wanted him to do, we wouldn't have the beautiful artistic music he's given us. It's gotta be tough being in such a huge band, with so many people telling you what to do. And we've all heard albums that were just paint by numbers of what people expected from an artist, it's freaking boring as hell. If you don't like something he's done, then you don't like it, but he's worked his tail off to try and keep making music that's he's excited about, and it sure seems to me he put an awful lot of work and himself into everything he did with the Chili Peppers since he's returned to the band. It's hard to put yourself out there, it seems like you're judging him without taking that into consideration at all.

  17. Nick Bevan says:

Hi everyone! Ok well there seems to be alot of debate on this. Chad Smiths comment and it all reverts back to Frusciante. Well honestly.. Nobody could imagine what the peppers are feeling right now, but they must need time to live, do things we do everyday that we take for granted. Walking down in your local town.. The Peppers wouldnt be able to do that everyday without getting mobbed. I think its a shame fans of the band are getting all fussy over this hiatus. Personally yeah, I would love to see them tour again and make a new album, but they do need time to do their own thing. Lets say they are 50 years old, they have spent a good 10 years in the studio, 30 years touring.. maybe 10 years on a break is more than accectible for them. Understand my drift? It makes sence. If Chad says they will reconviene.. then thats got to be a positive plan right now, they could be arranging it as we speak right now. If not then just chil! Seriously! Things will be fine in the end! :)

  18. jule says:

it really doesn't matter when they get back together, as long as they get back together SOMEDAY! then i'm happy!!! =)
