The staff of IForMusic.com are employees of the Franco-German TV network ARTE and they have decided to share a number of gems they recorded throughout years - whether it's audio or video - with the worldwide web. Five years ago, in 2004, they interviewed John at the Four Seasons in Paris, during his promotional duties for Shadows Collide With People. The interview is raw, sincere and there are no interviewers' questions - a soundtrack was added to it instead.
The interview is currently being transcribed, but in the meantime, enjoy the excerpt from its very beginning.
I listen to music constantly, all day long, every day, and-and it's never for any other reason than pleasure. I mean, I, you know, the fact that I write songs and the fact that I play guitar - that's all for pleasure. I don't listen to, I don't do any of that stuff for work, you know? I...for me, that's what I do for, for fun, you know? And I listen to music as it's the most beautiful thing in the world to me.
To listen to the whole thing, go to IForMusic.com, skip preload if you like and John's interview will be the first in the long row. You'll need Adobe Flash Player to listen to it...actually, to view the whole website.
Many thanks to Gizem for the heads-up on this.

Great! But is there a way to shut the guitar drone up? I can't even make up what John's saying...

Nah, it looks like there's only one audio track.
Wow, this is such a unique interview. Is it possible for anyone to compile a list of the songs that are being played in the background?

this interview is great. I feel the same way about most of the songs he talks about in this interview.
Is the background music that John talks about?>
I love how humble he is. Many rock stars are "too cool for school" and he just is such a fan and is talking like he's imagining people listening to this who are music fans, too.
I also love that John Cale "Amsterdam" song. It is so pretty.
And I had to chuckle when I heard him mentioning listening to a recording of Jimi Hendrix playing at the Isle of Wight festival because of a story I read in this book about the band the Cure. Robert Smith said he was 10 and his older brother was 20 years old when the Isle of Wight festival happened. Robert was so happy because he was the biggest Jimi fan in the universe and his big brother was going to take him to the festival. They got there, his brother met someone that had pot, or a girl he wanted to sleep with, or a girl he wanted to sleep with who had pot....something that caused him to leave little Robert in the tent with instructions not to leave. His brother remained gone for almost the whole festival and Robert listened to Jimi from inside the tent, far away from the stage where he wanted to be, and never quite forgave his brother for that.
oh also the bit where he said he went through a year of listening to music that wasn't really his thing just because he felt it was stuff he should learn so that others considered him a good guitar player. I wonder if anyone else is thinking what I'm thinking - Frank Zappa? Nice that he didn't mention the names of the artists that he listened to for work and not pleasure, though - he didn't sully all the good vibes of talking positively about so many people by saying anything negative about anyone.
What a great idea to release this interview! I appreciate the opportunity to find out more about him personally from him personally. He is such an extraordinary person, I love every chance to (maybe) get to know him a bit better. I’ve always considered that it’s enough to just listen to musicians’ songs to know him but with John it’s a little different. That is my feeling.
I’m not making much sense ( ) sorry about that, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this interview. AND the chance to find out about it. Thanks, Iva!
Really enjoyed listening to the interview, fascinating and as erudite as ever if slightly poignant. Interesting and eclectic but that's to be expected.
