  • Another beautiful review of the San Diego show…

OC Register‘s Ben Wener has written a wonderful review of the RHCP’s San Diego show last Tuesday. As always, I will let you read a sneak preview, and then the whole thing… What makes the Chili Peppers a double-threat, however, is their playing, which has rarely been fiercer. Kiedis is a tremendous presence, Flea perhaps the most gifted bassist going, and if there’s a steadier syncopation master than Smith working at such a level, I haven’t come across him. Those are important elements in this alchemy, for sure, but the reason why the group is cresting atop an all-time high rests entirely in Frusciante’s hands. Having battled back demons (including…

  • Reviews of the first of the Oakland shows

Just as expected, the RHCP concerts in Oakland, California, USA were successful….or at least the most of the reviewers agree on that. Since there are quite a few reviews available, I just picked the best bits for you and put them as excerpts for what you’re about to read when you click the links to full reviews. Enjoy. Inside Bay Area said: Although the band’s best known members are bassist Flea and vocalist Anthony Kiedis — both of whom sounded great in Oakland — the true star of this concert was indeed Frusciante. Having gone through more than his share of ups and downs over the years, the guitarist is…

  • Site updates, 24th August 2006

Here are the updates to the gallery. In the full magazine scans section, there’s one new set of scans, from the April 2001 issue of Guitar One. I’m working on adding the third Guitar One cover story to the collection, the one from 1999. Finally, there’s one more set of photos from one of John’s TROWFTD acoustic solo shows. Once again, it’s from the 15th March 2001, in New York City. The photos were taken by Yazan Fahmawi, they have not been seen on the internet before and you can find them right here. Enjoy them, they’re amazing. Back to 2006 and the current 1st leg of the USA tour……

  • Phoenix crowd loved John’s solo…

Here’s an East Valley Tribune review of the last night’s RHCP show in Phoenix, Arizona, USA; at the Glendale Arena. The best part first, then you can read the whole thing under the cut…many thanks to Chris Hansen Orf, the author, for saying such wonderful things about our John. The biggest surprise of the evening came when Frusciante – one of the true guitar heroes of the alt-rock era, often brimming with licks that sound like they were culled from Jimi Hendrix and Funkadelic’s great guitarist Eddie Hazel – slowed things down for a stunning solo take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “For Emily (Wherever I May Find Her) that had…

  • Denver show…a review…

RHCP played in Denver, Colorado, USA last night and there was something special on the setlist…the-first ever live version of Funky Monks. John also did a new cover song: The Shirelles’ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? Apparently, a contest winner requested it…as you’re going to see in the following review from Denver Post. If anything has changed about the Red Hot Chili Peppers over their 23 years, it’s not the veracity of their performances. Superstars since their 1991 album “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” went multi-platinum, the L.A. psych-funk band still retains the same squiggly energy that first propelled them to stardom. Their Friday night set at the Pepsi Center…
